so i keep seeing these MASSIVE pens and condos for everyones buns

i just have you basic livingworld cage… one level ‘blah’ thing.

am i skimping on him? should i build him something bigger?

the only time hes in his cage is bedtime.. i close him in before bed. and i open his door before i even open my eyes in the morning..

i feel like perhaps he needs more space? im in a small rental unit and i suppose i do have space for something more..

can you guys give me some advice.. im starting to feel bad.

the size of the cage depends on a couple of things. the size of the rabbit, I for instance have a Flemish Giant so I made a Big cage. and if your bun is only getting a couple of hours outside of the cage you need a larger one to try to keep him happy. If you don’t have the room and you give your bun plenty of exercise and freedom I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

thank you. hes still just a little dude and hes outside his cage ALLDAY running all over the furniture and in his cardboard boxes. playing in his igloo.

i dont think ill start building until ive decided its time to start bonding him with another little friend. in which case i plan on building something so massive and amazing every bun in the world will be jealous.

thanks for the insight.. i love all the help i get being with BB much better than comparing ‘yahoo answers’

Your Welcome, just be sure to date your bunny before you bring one home!! Best way, don’t do what I did just assume that you can bond them, cause Nibbles and Blue do NOT get along Period!!!

Exactly what bullrider said! And from the sounds of it, it seems yours gets lots of time out of the cage so think of it as giving yourself plenty of time to come up with plans for a future condo and maybe even having a very long time to collect all the equipment and tools necessary

since im in a rental unit and im wanting to build something more tall than wide.. im worried about when the time to move comes.. do you guys have any ideas on how to make a condo that can be broken down in to pieces for easier moving?

ive read up on many DIY cages and they say zip ties galore.. and when i hang his toys in his current cage i use zip ties.. we have thousands of those already but perhaps come the second layer there is something else i could use that easily removed for breakdown and re assembly?

                    hmmmm

Easy break down? NIC grids! I also love that you can switch around the grids if you want a different look eventually. Some people don’t care for them but they’ve worked out really well for me. Zip ties & grids Thanks btw! I got my bun unexpectedly and was getting so impatient to make a condo lol.

Also another option for easy break down would be x-pens. They’re pretty spacious too, just make sure its tall enough that your bun can’t jump out of it or that you put a top on it so Yeti can’t get out during night time.

jumping doesnt seem to be an issue with him… i dont think he knows he has the ability to launch himself to insane heights.. he tries to jump up on the 2.5 ft couch and fails. every time. its kind of pathetic and i cant help but laugh hysterically. i was thinking perhaps his hind legs arent as muscular as they should be. so we’ve started forcing him to stretch and use them in order to grab treats,.

                          can never be too careful.

My bunny jumps pretty high too. I had her in a playpen for quite some time. She’s able to jump easily right onto my bed which is higher than her playpen but I think she never jumped over the pen because there was nothing to really land on. Jumping is good exercise for bunnies, so definitely get something for her to jump on and encourage it with treats once he gets to the top

I feel like I’m posting way too much right now…I’ve been waiting for my bunny to wake up lol. We stayed up until 3am last night by accident =/

dont worry about posting too much. you’re helping me out a lot and i appreciate it

he does a lot of lounging and stretches when its time to stand up .. its super cute. but im thinking perhaps the 2 hours a day outside isnt enough. and getting him to move his lazy butt indoors is a headache..

Hehe, I forgot if you mentioned in another post, but how old is he? I think the mcdonalds cup seems to be a great thing to help keep him motivated to move and I recall you saying you take him outside on a harness (I like your pic on your avatar). I’m not really sure of what else you can do to get him to move around more. I think I just got lucky with a fairly hyper bun. She’s not too hyper but she’s very curious of everything so I really have to make sure I have all my stuff put away before I let her out lol.

Only other thing I can think of are that bunnies are more active during mornings and evening/night time. You could try playing with him more around those times? What I do is (I might sound a little here but…) I get on my hands and knees & crawl around the room with my bun lol. She likes to chase me around. Also I made a post about training her and someone mentioned target training. You can use a stick as the target, some people even use some sort of mat or something to lay on the ground, basically anytime they touch the stick, they get a treat. They usually catch on pretty fast. You can do this around dinner time, that way they are already hungry for their food instead of just treats (since you can’t give them too many treats). And just keep moving the target around the floor. Eventually they will go wherever the target is. Keep in mind though, that bunnies get tired of training so occasionally they will wonder off during training. Just be patient and wait until they decide they want to train some more

Maybe it could help him move around some more.

we really dont know his age because we rescued him and the vet was unsure but i still think hes young… we’ve had him for a month and hes not only growing in weight but his legs are getting longer.. my best guess is 12-18 months old.

target training sounds like an awesome idea. after he gets the hang of it do i just kind of taper off the food reward?
