I was just curious when people found out that their bun had a tooth problem and HOW.

I know I am probably being paranoid – but I have read a few threads where people talk about how their buns died of tooth problems that they didn’t know about and it makes me worry.

Lola acts perfectly fine and will even munch on these really hard homemade treats (applesauce, bran, etc.) so I feel like her teeth aren’t bothering her but they are obviously something that I can’t just open up her mouth and check.  The front ones are fine – it’s the back I’m talking about….

The vet did a well bunny check at her spay and I’m assuming that covered her chompers — but….like I said, just curious!

Rabbit teeth are usually very difficult to see (the back teeth), so the vet should use a special tool to see them. Do you know if your vet did this? The vet I have been going to doesn’t do this, so I’m actually switching to a different vet and have a check up scheduled for Thursday. Tooth problems can be hard to detect but paying attention to eating habits, any signs of pain (such as tooth grinding or bulging eyes), and regular check ups can really help.

Symptoms of teeth problems can be subtle or severe. They include drooling, difficulty eating, not willing to eat hay, weight loss, pain when you touch the buns cheek area and mooshy poo wads.

If your bunny isn`t showing any symptoms of tooth problems then I would suggest having your vet check them during her yearly exam. They will use an otoscope to see the teeth. Older buns should have their teeth checked more often.

I had heard they needed a special tool to see them. Good to know. She loves her little cheeks rubbed (to the point of following asleep and grinding) so I’ll take that as a good sign right now that she is ok.

I just want to make sure there wasn’t something I could be missing and will definitely have her looked at during her next yearly exam.
