After recently losing my bun Sophie and dicovering this site, I wish I had found it a lot sooner! I’ve always given my bunnies veggies at random (ones I knew were safe of course) but definitely not enough leafy greens. After reading the recommended diet of leafy greens on the site, I went out and bought a few greens for my bun Butters. There are some that shes never had before and I was just wondering if it would be best to try her slowly with them or go straight to giving her the whole recommended daily amount?

Start slowly, so you can see how she reacts to them. Small amounts, with only one new type a week.

The Giant, at least in our area, sells carrots that have the leaf green goodness part still attached.

I work for a Kroger based grocery store (look them up and they will show locations in your area, by the Kroger name or another name) and the organic carrots usually will have the tops included. So I buy the organic carrots to juice and give the tops to Chacha bunny.

Those are fine when you are in a pinch. Sometimes when I am in a rush I will grab pre-bagged salad mixes. Just be careful on the veggies with high oxalic acid (Leafy Greens 1 on the HRS list http://www.rabbit.org/care/veggies.html). Typically Spring Mixes have a lot of spinach and you want to make sure to give that in small doses.

It’s actually MUCH cheaper to buy bunches of romaine, red lettuce, parsley, etc. I chop them up and keep them in a big tupperware container in my fridge so I can just grab a large handful in the morning for breakfast and again at dinner for my bun. It’s a lot cheaper (lettuce is about 99 cents right now in Cali and herbs are about 59 cents a bunch).

                          Hope that helps!

EDIT TO ADD:  Also, I 2nd the ‘start slowly’ thing.  Introduce new veggies slowly into the diet – if your rabbit hasn’t had them before it’s best to take it slow so they don’t get upset tummies.  Also, I sometimes like to give my veggies a good wash with water before I give them to Lola before I feed them to her if she isn’t drinking what I think is enough water – it’s a sneaky way for her to get a lot of hydration while eating her favorite greens.  The girl is a cilantro monster!

I usually give them a salad of Red Leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce, and Cilantro (thier Favorite) and a a couple of carrots or Orange and green bell peppers, I was just curious if this was better for them

Sorry – I posted that after realizing that you weren’t the original person asking the question and then just got all sorts of confused!
