Hi (again)! Sorry I’ve done so many posts recently!

Earlier I booked Wilbur in for his vaccinations tomorrow, it suddenly occurred to me that I don’t know if he’s already had them..

On the breeders advert she mentioned he’d had some preventative treatments so I’m thinking she would have mentioned vaccinations too if he’d already had them..

My question is  if he has had them done and I take him to get them done tomorrow, can this harm him?

PS. I have emailed the breeder to ask her but she hasn’t got back to me yet.

I’ve never had any vaccinations for my rabbits. My vet said they aren’t needed. My vet does recommend a yearly check-up, where she will look at his teeth, weight, etc.

Do you live in the US? I believe you don’t need them but in the UK vaccinations are highly recommended against VHD and myxomatosis.

I never knew! Sorry! I do live in the US. I wasn’t even thinking that it could be different for different countries.

Hi, yes the vaccinations are required in UK so it’s an unfamiliar question to many of us here in the states.
That said, your vet would be the most familiar with the nature of the vaccines and whether they are harmful if doubled up. I would call the vet ASAP, let her know your question, and ask if you should bring him in as scheduled, wait to reschedule until you hear from the breeder if that’s even reliable, or if there’s a test the vet can do to determine if it’s still necessary. I bet this comes up a lot with people saying “I don’t know” when asked if their bunny had their shots yet.

I used to get mine done 6monthly with the VHD vaccine rather then yearly and vet said this was fine. But I wasn’t sure with myxo vaccine as we don’t have it here.

There are a couple vaccines (lapinject & anivac) that rabbits do better with so might be worth asking if your vet uses these. I believe there is a combined myxo/RVHD jab now in the UK also?

Regarding the RVHD jab, I found mine were a bit quiet the next day after their booster shot, but the first one they had, there was no change. So depending on how Wilbur goes, that might give you a clue as to whether it’s been done before. If 2nd round of shots then the immune response is quick and you might notice he’s a little off key for a day. Not to worry though, they rally again quickly also. Ask your vet what to expect.

He had a combined VHD and myxo one, and he’s got to have it yearly. He was quite quiet yesterday after he had it done but fine today .

                        Thanks for your help
