I am SO HAPPY! Yesterday I was toying with the idea of teaching Ariadne to let me kiss her nose. She was already sticking her nose through the cage, getting a kiss, followed by a treat but I wanted to add a command so I started saying “kisses” and kissing her nose whenever she reached up towards me. Only 5 repetitions later she had it down pat!

I’ve gotta say, I am so happy about this. I LOVE training animals and now that I know she’s not only intelligent but very receptive to training I really want to have fun with it. In the 15 minute session we had this evening I clicker trained her, reinforced the “kisses” command, and taught her “come here” and “up” which she quickly mastered. Tomorrow I want to work on those as well as add “spin”.

Do you guys have any good tricks that I could work on? How did you go about producing the behavior and reinforcing it? I am so excited about this and it’s only been 24 hours since I found out she enjoys training!

I love teaching my bunnies tricks too! Some have been brighter than others (heh) but they all learn quite well. I recently taught Peppy to take a small ball from the ground and put it into a box…a little bit trickier but I’m sure Adriadne can master it .

Both of mine can spin around and target an object (I use a tupperware lid). One thing to focus on is getting them to do the trick without you leading it. Mine could spin around in 5min when I lead them, but it took them a couple weeks to do it on their own (and they still don’t do it on command – they mostly do it when they see I have treats). You can spend a lot of time really perfecting the tricks you do teach.

Our rabbit will stand or walk on his hind legs for treats. All I say is Treat! I can say “here boy!” and he will run to me. He knows “Don’t think about it” “No” “Bad boy” “Go to your room” “Go to bed (cage)” “Daddy’s home” “Good boy” “Dinner/breakfast time!” “Treat” and more.

The most useful ever is that when I shake his bottle of papaya vitamins, he comes running (he thinks they are treats!). That is very useful for when I let him run in our fenced backyard. I can get him back to me to come in by shaking the bottle.

To teach him the bad stuff, like no and don’t think about it, I used to clap every time I said it, which spooked him and taught him what he was doing was wrong. Now, it is nice when I have company and he eyes the entertainment center to say “Don’t think about it” and he walks off. It is an impressive trick for guests

Go to your room and go to bed were taught by saying it over and over then putting him in either his bedroom or cage. Now, he knows and will run from the kitchen to his back bedroom when asked.

He learned dinner/breakfast/treat very quickly! To get him to learn how to balance on his hind legs, I held a large carrot and let him eat it only if he was standing (he had to stand to reach it). However, he is a rex/dwarf mix. He has the larger butt of a Rex rabbit and small arms/head of a dwarf, so it is easy for him to balance.

Here boy was taught by rewarding him with pets when he came.

He is very smart and loves to make us happy. He gets very upset when he is told he is bad. Our first rabbit of 6 years never learned any tricks. She was too independent and never cared if she was told she was bad!

I’m keen to know about more tricks. I saw people  on youtube with like an agility course. They were able to train hamsters and rabbits to do the whole thing and even CHICKENS!!!!!!
                  So funny haha

Looks so hard but i guess if you lead your bun the course and give her a treat at the end and spend 5 minutes everyday doing this… any animal could get it? I mean if a chicken can surely a rabbit can?? Im going to try this as soon as Wolfie perfects the simpler tricks and i find props for a lil rabbit obstacle course haha

I SO want to make an obstacle course! Today we started working on “touch” because I made a target for her. I duct taped a cat ball on the end of a small rod and she quickly figured out what she was supposed to do with it. I didn’t get to work on “spin” because I had to take care of my mother who had surgery a few days ago. She seems to have her other commands from last night down though

That’s exactly the next move I was going to suggest, which is described in the Clicker Training book. I guess the way it works is that once you teach them the touch move, you can get them to go through the obstacle course by moving it along the way.

Not a trick, but one suggestion would be to train her to get into and out of either her carrier or a box. That way, if you need to go somewhere (like the v. e. t.) you can get her to do it voluntarily.

I say to Sammy “gimme kiss” and she puts her nose up so I can kiss it, too.

We have taught ours how to go to his large cage for bed, but we have used his small carrier as serious rabbit jail time (if the cage or being sent to his bedroom doesn’t work). Is there another good option for time out, so that we can train him to go to the small carrier for the vet? That would be nice! Though, I don’t know if we go enough for him to remember… hmm…
