So it turns out my cats have fleas. While it isn’t really bad or anything, I’m really worried about my bunny that I just got today. She’s only 4 weeks old (I know, kinda early. The person I got her from has had them away from the mother for maybe a few days or so since they didn’t need to be with her anymore, and the other two babies were taken yesterday, I believe.) and she’s staying in a room where I also have my two guinea pigs and my hamster. The door always stays shut, and I’ve sprayed the outside and inside of the doorway with flea spray, as well as in the room (not directly towards any of my pets though). I have been making a point of wiping off my clothes before entering the room. I’m just so worried and paranoid! I’m just afraid that since she’s so young, that the fleas might have a bad effect on her? I’ve read that both Advantage, and Revolution are safe for treating bunnies of fleas, but would it be safe to apply a drop or two to her to prevent them? Thank you so much!

Oh my gosh, your bunny is so young Is she okay, as in eating fine? It angers me that babies are separated from their mother so young

Do you have an established exotic vet? They will be able to tell you what dosage of flea medicine that you will be needing.

The rescue I got my buns from recommended Advantage or Revolution kitten formula. DO NOT USE Frontline, it kills rabbits. As for applying it to your bun at that age I have no idea. I would see a vet. Likely it was not ready to leave the momma just yet.

I had a small scare with fleas, never saw any but apparently my dog had some on her and they bit her. We took her to the vet because she was itching like crazy and losing hair. It was determined she is allergic to flea bites. She only had a few on her. The vet couldn’t even find any but she got flea dirt off her. Anyways, my 3 cats and dog have been treated but I have yet to treat the buns. I just haven’t taken them outside. They are fine and I see no fleas. I am still going to treat them soon though.

While advantage and revolution in the right dosage

is okay for adult bunnies, I don’t know about a bunny as young as 4 weeks.  I agree with Lovechacha about visiting a rabbit-savvy vet. Might be best anyway since this bunny is soo young – too young to have been weaned from the mother at 4 weeks.

@LoveChaCha – Yes, she’s eating fine. I had been worried that she hadn’t been drinking or anything, so I unattached the water bottle, and put it up to her. I guess she didn’t understand what it was before, because she drank for about 3 minutes straight! She seems to be quite healthy despite her young age.

Alright, I’ll see about making her a vet appointment.

Um, well my parents don’t seem to think it’s a very likely chance she’ll get them. They’ve been doing vacuuming, treating our cats, and using flea spray around the house. Since I’ve been spraying inside and outside the doorway of the room, sometimes a bit inside the room, and have been wiping off my clothing each time before I enter the room, do you think that’s enough? If she actually did end up getting fleas I would take her to the vet.

She can certainly get fleas if they are present in the house. Is this a long-term problem, or did the cats just recently get them? Keeping the cats out of the bunny’s space is a good idea. Do you have a rabbit vet? Within the next few weeks, it will be a good idea to take her in for a baseline exam, fecal test, and confirmation of sex. You can also talk to the vet about spaying (or neutering if she turns out to be a boy).

Alright, I’ll definitely make her a vet appointment. I told my dad everything that should be done during a vet visit and how important it is in both my situations, and he said I could book an appointment. I’m going to do that tomorrow morning! I’m actually so excited, just because I can’t wait to know the full condition of my bunny and what treatments they have to offer to keep the fleas away! I’ve been so paranoid and stressed about it… And what makes my excitement even more strange is that I’m using my own money to pay, and I only have just over a hundred dollars in total anyways… hahaha oh how it sucks to live with your parents and not be paid for anything… Thank you so much for your answers, I’ll let you all know how it goes!

I agree with having the opinion of a rabbit savvy vet. There are some natural “helps” that will help keep fleas off of your rabbit. Putting a bowl with soapy water under a lamp at night near the bun’s cage will help kill fleas if there are any near her cage. Also, I suggest treating your cats with Revolution if they are indoor/outdoor cats. Just in case so they don’t bring in fleas or fur mites.

I had an issue with fleas with my bun a few months back. She wasn’t nearly as young as yours. What our vet at the time had us do was give her a half dosage of Advantage’s Kitten Formula.

Okay, thank you! I’ll keep that in mind!
I’ve booked her a vet appointment for tomorrow afternoon, so I’ll have the vet’s opinion of what would be safe, plus I’ll have all the basic tests done for my new bunny!

Are your parents going to help cover daily care and vet costs or are you solely financially responsible? Rabbits are not inexpensive to care for and $100 won’t go very far.

They are helping, and I’m going to start earning more money. Don’t worry, we’ve had more pets than we do now, we can handle the costs. The bunny isn’t only mine, my family is sharing it, so we also are going to be sharing the costs. I’m just paying for this specific vet visit.

Our vet gave us Revolution. It was pretty cheap, only $17 for two doses (one doses lasts two months) and it cleared Foo up really quickly.

It’s so great that your family is being so helpful and understanding. You must be doing a great job explaining the special needs that rabbits have. Good luck at the vets! I hope everything goes well, welcome to bunny parenthood!

@Huckleberry – I know! I’m very lucky for everything they do for me and our pets! And thank you, I’m very excited!!

Well thanks everyone for the help! The vet took a look at my bunny, and he actually is thinking it’s a boy! I saw as well, and I’m not very sure. I’ll check again in a little while and see if it’s any easier to tell. The vet also said that he is very healthy, and has extremely good teeth! He thinks that between me spraying the doorway, and wiping off my clothes, that the fleas should stay out. I asked him what would be safe if my bunny does get fleas though, and he said half a thing of Advantage kitten treatment will work!
