Hi, I’m interested in finding out more about the lava or pumice stone chew blocks that you find in pet stores. I figure it never hurts to give bunnies plenty of ways to keep their teeth in shape. So I would like to hear from anyone who’s tried these blocks and whether their rabbits do regularly use and enjoy them. Also any cautionary notes, and what are good brands or not so good, if any.

        Thanks!

I have never heard of lava or pumice stone chew blocks. I checked the HRS site for safe items for a rabbit to chew on, and they are not included in the list. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t safe, but I think there may be better items for them to chew on. One of the best things for a rabbit’s teeth is to eat a variety of hays. Other items are apple, willow or aspen branches, untreated willow baskets or willow rings, and untreated wooden toys.

Pumice stones are used for chinchillas. I would think it would be too hard for a rabbit to want to chew on. The lava “bites” would be pulverized within minutes by my chins, so we always had to get the grey pumice cubes.

Best thing to keep teeth in shape is hay. I wouldn’t give them lava chewing blocks, in my opinion. I wouldn’t want my buns eating that stuff.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. PetCo has some really nice untreated wood items you can hook onto the side of the buns cage — our buns LOVE them and they’re untreated (so really safe) and range from $3-5 so cheap but sturdy! Our girl actually loves the little apple branch sticks they sell too! They could gnaw on them for hours.

I agree with the others. I wouldnt give them because its so unnatural for a bunny. Hay and bunny safe wood are the way to go.

Thanks for the replies – guess we’ll stick with sticks for now!
