        Hi guys,

My fiancé has decided he wants a bun! I’ve had the Thane Train for over a year and a half now and we want to get a female for him to snuggle with.
My fiancé Matthew lives in Greenville, SC and I’m in Ireland. We aren’t getting married for a year, so there’s plenty of time to have his potential new gal spayed and vaccinated before introducing the two. Thane’s snip recovery continues to go well!

Anyway, originally he saw a BEAUTIFUL 1yr old lionhead for adoption on Craigslist. She was perfect for us, but sadly, she was gone already. Matthew was heartbroken, but has not given up. I’ve suggested rabbit shelters nearby, but we’re not sure where to look. We would love to adopt a female who is of similar age to Thane. Also, is there an issue bonding dwarfs with larger breeds? We were thinking of a Lionhead because they’re not that much bigger than Thane. He’s about 3.5lbs.

Any advice and reccommendtions are greatly welcomed and appreciated!

        Thanks guys!

Your best bet with bonding is waiting until both are fixed and letting thane picking his friend. But I know that might be hard for your guy to wait so I would suggest googling rescues near him. Then he can look how far each is from him.. When he goes, tell the people at the rescue you want to potentially bond her to your guy and they might be able to point you in the right direction of who would be a good fit. For example: I talk to my rescue lady about Bunjamin all the time and she’s already got good potential buddies to start with. She has a couple of rabbits who are very rabbit friendly and want a friend. That kinda thing.

As for size. I don’t really think it matters. There’s a member on here, bullrider who has a flemish giant bonded with a mini lop. They make a cute pair.

            Ha! Really? That’s pretty funny!

We will hopefully bond them in a years time in a whole new house for both rabbits! I would prefer Matthew got a rabbit sooner rather than later so we can learn about her personality.

I’ve tried googling, but nothing has really stood out yet.

Rabbits in the US don’t need vaccinations.

Here is a link to Petfinders for SC:

Hopefully that link works correctly from Petfinders.

I live in Greenville, SC. There are usually a couple of rabbits at the Spartanburg Humane Society at any time. http://www.spartanburghumane.org/sm…option.php . They spay and neuter the rabbits there. Unfortunately, the Greenville Humane Society does not spay and neuter and they euthanize almost as soon as they take rabbits in, if they even take one in the first place. There are humane societies in every county of SC, but many don’t take rabbits, and most of them don’t spay or neuter, so you will have that added expense.

A few years ago, I adopted a rabbit from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control Shelter in Charlotte, NC. They also spay and neuter there. They have 2 rabbits right now. Their phone number is 704-336-3786. http://www.petharbor.com/results.asp?WHERE=type_OO&PAGE=1&searchtype=ADOPT&rows=10&imght=120&imgres=thumb&view=sysadm.v_chrl1&bgcolor=000099&text=white&link=white&alink=white&vlink=white&fontface=arial&fontsize=10&col_hdr_bg=white&col_hdr_fg=blue&col_bg=white&col_fg=black&SBG=333333&shelterlist=’CHRL’

The closest rescue to Greenville is Cullens Archangel rescue in Columbia, SC. They are a multispecies rescue, but they have several rabbits. Here is their link http://www.caretoadopt.org/animals/list?Species=Rabbit.

                  There are 3 rescues in North Carolina that I know of – Animal Haven of Asheville, Asheville, NC, http://animalhaven.org/;
All Creatures Rescue & Sanctuary, Apex, NC http://www.allcreaturesrescue.org/; and
Dance With the Bunnies Rabbit Rescue (Friends of Pitt County Animal Shelter), Greenville, NC,
http://www.bunspace.com/view_bunny?bunid=3547. The last one will be the farthest away from Greenville, SC, it’s near the coast of NC.

There is a chapter of the HRS in Marietta, GA, which is a couple of hours away from Greenville, SC,

That is really really helpful, thank you! We’ve spotted a beautiful lionhead in GA were considering! How do your buns cope in the heat over there? I’m very excited about moving there myself, greenville city is incredible! I’m hoping Thane will love it too!

Another option (that your fiance may not like) would be to take Thane on bunny dates where you live to meet a potential mate he will like – after he’s completely healed from the neuter of course. It’s just that it can be much harder to get 2 bunnies to bond if they dislike each other when they meet. A variation on that is to wait until you are moved to SC, line of the shelters where you want to find his girl, and then all go together on dates at the shelters. It doesn’t guarantee a great bond, but there are definite indications when bunnies meet as to whether they will potentially get along well. I know it’s hard for your fiance to wait, but if you do, you will all be settled in, have your house set up for 2 bunnies, (you need to keep them totally separated at first) and can meet whoever is available at that time.
Shelter staff will be able to put him with certain personalities that have potential to get along with him and both bunnies can try it out first. Usually you’ll like the breed and looks of a bunny that he picks himself.

Oh, I meant to say also that if you found someone he likes where you live and work on the bond ahead of time, if it goes well you can bring them over together and it’s less difficult to set up a new home for a bonded pair. Much more work for you to do the bonding, but if you have a couple of months you can be successful if you start with a bunny he picks out himself.

I guess I’d sum up bonding as having a priority of compatible first, cute second.

My bunnies stay inside in the air conditioning during most of the summer. They do love to spend time on the screen porch, but when it’s really hot, they only go out there early in the morning or late at night.

I volunteer at a nearby Rabbit Sanctuary (we do not adopt out, they are given a home for life) and I have a list of rabbit savvy vets in Greenville and in the surrounding area (Simpsonville, SC) that I give out to people who ask our advice.  I would be glad to give you that list if you like.
