Going to try to make this long story as short as possible. My boyfriend has been suffering severe headache/ neck cramping for 2 wks. We have been in and out ER with no solution. He has now been admitted and being treated for encephalitis. They have asked me numerous times about mosquito or wild animal bites. Didnt think about it until today but Frappe bit him about month and a half ago. One Dr told me she was very concerned about this and it is being looked at as possible cause. (They really are not sure what he has- alsobeing given meds for meningitis.) Frappe has bit me several times and I’m fine. He came from a pet store so he is not a wild rabbit. Is this possible??

I think a month and a half old bite would have cause issues way before this 2 week sickness. I hope your boyfriend gets better!

That’s what I thought! I think they are really grasping at straws to figure out what is wrong. Thank you!

If they’re sure it’s encephalitis then I don’t think a bunny bite would cause that over a month ago. Most common reaction would be an allergy, and that happens much faster. Since a mosquito bite can disappear quickly, or go unnoticed, I’d bet on that.

Also, if there was a little round red circle on him within the past few weeks, it could be lyme disease, also caused by a bug bite. I think he just needs to be treated now.

You could call your vet and ask if there is any blood test you can do on your bunny to check for a strain that may have been passed along (encephalitis or something else, I mean). It might be prudent to rule it out, or if the vet finds anything dormant, bunny could be treated. Just in case.

Well, I’m not sure where you live, but we have been having numerous cases of West Nile Virus where I am and it’s been pretty unusual according to health experts in my area. I would think a most likely cause would be a mosquito bite.

I hope your boyfriend gets better soon – healing vibes.

I have a bitey bunny and despite being bitten repeatedly (she is improving) I have never had a moments sickness. If they have treated and tested for encephilitis thats a good thing but sometimes it can be very hard to treat correctly and the primary cause down here is usually dirty swimming pools or stagnant swimming holes. An associate had something similar recently and I insisted she go to the hospital after 3 days of pain, it turned out to be a partially blocked blood vessel in her brain. they treated it in time and she is fine now. Head aches and neck cramps can be caused by a whole range of things including a back or neck problem, such as whiplash or sciatica. As to diseases it is more likely to have been caused by a mosquito bite than your bun, especially if you have been bitten in the past and had no ill effects. I think your boyfriend needs to seek a second opinion. It can’t hurt and the doctors won’t be offended. RabbitPam is right about possible lyme disease (Tic Bite) and getting your bunny tested at the very least it will rule out some possibilities and set your mind at rest.

I am reading that domestic rabbits can be hosts to West Nile Virus – but your rabbit would have had to have been infected by a mosquito as it can only be passed on during a blood meal….

OOPS, When I was taliking about the dirty pools etc that is not the cause of Encephilitis but Meningitis… I am assuming they have checked for Meningitis and if they haven’t I would be insisting on it especially if he is starting to show any signs of light sensitivity. I have a friend who lost her husband to Meningitis because they didn’t bother to check and just kept sending him home with pain killers.

Meningitis can be caused by both bacterial and viral sources even a bad dose of sinusitis that doesn’t clear properly…

Thank you everyone for being so helpful! They are going to continue to treat for encephalitis and meningitis until they know for sure what is going on. They have sent some blood off to test for lyme disease. We just had a new nurse come on shift who is great. She doesnt feel it has anything to do with the rabbit bite. Thank u again everyone
