Bought a rabbit yesterday in all excitement since I’ve been preparing and waiting for quite a while! Asked loads of questions about him then when I took him home and looked at him he definitely does not look 8 weeks old? She told me he was but I don’t know what the size of an 8 week old looks like and I saw some rabbits last week which looked twice his size!?!? He’s absolutely tiny and can fit on my palms? I’m worried the seller sold me him a too early age? His ears haven’t even lopped fully yet ? I’ve read up a lot about rabbits but I’m no expert and I’ve been in preparation for ages but I’m not sure if I care for it the same as the info I’ve been getting?

Is it okay to be feeding him the rabbit muslei the seller gave me and slowly get him on pellets? He’s eating all the muslei I put infront of him and running around like a crazy dog!!

Still need to take him to have a check up at the vets but he does look very very small?? Somebody help please =(

        Wolfie in his pet carrier

He does look a bit shy of 8 weeks to me. Maybe 6 weeks? My loppy boy’s ears flopped at about 8 and a half weeks completely.

Is the food he has a mix, with seeds and corn and crap mixed in? If so, switch to a plain pellet, the seeds and corn are NOT good for him at all.

He should be okay, just get a check up done, its good to have a new pet check up anyway

Welcome to being a bunny slave!

Eek! I wouldnt put him past 4weeks old. Maybe 5… Idk.

Was the seller a registered breeder?

            How much does he weigh?

He’s cute and I love the name. But young!

I have a mini lop too. He does look young. I agree with Monkeybun, take away the mix if it has other things in it. It’s junk food and NOT healthy for buns. My mini’s ears fully flopped at about 9ish weeks. Have you found a bunny savvy vet, yet? He could help determine age and what the best course of action is.

Just wanna say — I love your little guy and welcome to BB! Definitely take him to a rabbit-savvy vet so you can get everything straightened out with the little guy. Have you named him yet??

He does look younger than 8 weeks, just judging from his face. I’d guess 5-6 weeks – definitely weaned, but he should’ve stayed with mom longer.

The ears won’t tell you much – my boy was full lopped when I took him home at 8 weeks, but there are lops that don’t lop until 6 months. It just depends on their ear and head structure, so it’s hard to base age assumptions on ears.

What is the food like? I’m not sure I understand what it is, but either way he’s old enough for pellets so he should be eating that, along with as much timothy or alfalfa hay as he can eat.

Aww thanks for the welcome haha!  Been reading the forums for ages and only just joined lol. I posted for help in 2 forums and you have been most helpful! =)

Breeder never said she was registered but she had been breeding for over a year and said she had litter trained them even though Wolfie just poops everywhere.

I’ve already given him small portions of the mix a few times and his tummy is feeling really fat and he looks really round and bloated? o.O and yes it does have seeds =/ I’ve taken it out his cage now and will buy some pellets before work tomorrow . Do I need junior/dwarf pellets? I live in a small place and the only pet shop near me is pets at home and I haven’t heard good things from them.

Thanks guys! !!!! So exciteeeeddd I’m a mamma now hahaha

He looks young to me but not as small as baby was when we rescued her from the pet store. and she was only skin and bones. I would just keep a close eye on him to make sure he eats, drinks, and poops regularly. try feeding him some calf mana, thats what my vet put baby on and she did well.

                        Hello and welcome

When bunnies move to a new home, they may loose their litter habits. Especially baby bunnies, they are not yet trained, but don’t give up!

Can you clarify what you mean by mix? Do you mean pelleted food? I would recommend a plain alfalfa pellet since little one is still a baby.

You can always order online from the BinkyBunny store- it sells the best kind of pellets for bunnies, which is Oxbow Alfalfa pellets. They ship pretty fast and always add a little something special for bunny

                          Hi welcome to BB

Your bunny is super adorable but I agree with everyone else that he does look very young. Most laws in the US require rabbits to be at least 8 weeks old I believe. But, now that you have him it sounds like you’re doing your best to make sure he is going to be happy and healthy.

About the stomach bloating, is he pooping like normal?

Baby rabbits may be forgetful of their litter box habits but they are totally able to be trained It took 3 days at home for my rabbit to be trained when she was a baby. Once they hit the hormone stage at about 4-6 months they usually forget them again until they are spayed or neutered.

A good rabbit food in my opinion is Oxbow Essentials – Young Rabbit. If there isn’t a good rabbit pellet at the pet store near year this brand can be ordered online (Binky Bunny even sells it). In the meantime if you can find a plain pellet that has a high amount of fiber that would be the best for him. Since he’s a baby normally an alfalfa based pellet is recommended. He should be also given plenty of fresh hay 24/7, timothy is a good one. The hay should also be just plain hay without anything like seeds added to it. Steer clear of anything with nuts or seeds. Also not sure if you know this already but yogurt drops are also dangerous, even though they are sold as rabbit treats rabbits cannot have any dairy products. Here’s a link to a page from the House Rabbit Society which gives good info on diet, especially what to feed at which age: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html

I’ll throw this out here, if someone else mentioned it, sorry for the duplicate. I read the responses fairly quickly.
Since your bun is younger I’d wait a bit longer to introduce greens. The normal time is around 12 weeks to start introducing veggies, one at a time. Wait until you think he might be around that age, provided that he is a good eater of hay already.

I give him meadow hay and he eats a lot of that so cute but bit dumb as he eats it from his litter tray too even though theres a massive basket full of it next to the tray haha.
He had just a rabbit mix it had like dried stuff in it like weird fried eggs looking things and dried orange things and seeds =S I’ve taken it out of his cage but I don’t know what to feed him now as I’ve just ordered some oxbow essentials baby rabbit food but will take 2 days to get here. Do I just feed him hay? I haven’t fed him any veggies at all and his poop looks normal just a lot of it.
His cage door is always open into his pen but he’s only just learned how to jump in and out and he was out in the pen when I woke up but no poops anywhere. I ordered some yesterdays news as his bedding is pretty much same as litter tray. I have a strong feeling I’ll be spending all of my money on him haha

If you can pick out the pellets from the mix and give him those, should be okay.

And bunnies like to eat and go at the same time, so eating hay out of his litter box is totally normal. It even helps with litter training if they can only get hay when in their potty.

I would take out his “bedding” completely, and put it just in his potty. Having bedding everywhere int eh cage will only confuse him with litter training. Saves a ton of money too.

Thanks Monkeybun i didnt realise but he does have pellet looking things in his mixes =)

What should I use instead of bedding though? I’ve got towels and a fleece but I thought I’d try incorporate that after he gets litter trained in his pen and is able to run wild in my room. I use straw for his bedding which he eats as wel o.O

I had already spent £100 before I even got him *facepalm*

It could be coccidia. Coccidia is treatable – see if you can see a vet first thing in the morning and get a fecal test done to check for this.

Well a rabbit this size is probably not going to eat a whole bunch anyway. If he is not lethargic and is still eating something that is good.

Well that poo sounds like cecals to me. Cecals are like little grape like clusters which are perfectly normal and rabbits consume those.

Ahh yeh relieving me a little bit!  So the diarrhoea…is sort of diminishing? I was so worried because I had read about babys and diarrhoea :/ I think he just had really wet poo/light diarhea and sat on it and smeared it everywhere. I washed his bottom with warm water and pulled out the dry lumps of poo caught in his fur.

I managed to contact the breeder who told me I had probably given him too much rabbit mix and to give him more hay. I must have given him too much on the first day because I stopped feeding him that stuff when I came to binkybunny for help

Sorry for my inexperience just freaked out slightly!  Thanks Sartia =)

It’s not a problem. It is common for new rabbit owners to confuse cecals and diarrhea as well. I would however, set her up to see a vet to test for coccidia.

I think once you transition him to better pellets and get him on a regular diet of grass hay as well, that will help.

I couldnt leave her there to die. she took a little extra care but she is well and now is about 4 lbs. So keep your head up, I would also make a trip to the vet to get checked out. Seems this happens a lot these days! She couldnt find his balls because his genitals were too small.. or should I say her genitalia

LOL have to get use to saying she now. Vet told me to come back for the jabs when she is old enough and have another re-sexing because it might be too early too tell. She’s only 260g and she’s fine and she inspected her poo and everything looks normal !! WAHOOOO

I’ve also taught her to spin. She does it sometimes I caught it on camera will be youtubing that asap!!

I give him meadow hay and he eats a lot of that so cute but bit dumb as he eats it from his litter tray too even though theres a massive basket full of it next to the tray haha.

Haha! No, not dumb at all. Most our buns do this. So “ditto” Monkeybuns advice ^ ^. Putting the hay only in the litter tray or his basket over the tray and you will be well on your way to having him litter trained. Or her… lol.

I see you are in the UK. I think the Oxbow brand in available there but some other quality feeds are Science Selective and Burgess Excell. Try the Junior feeds but if he gets messy poo you might have to try the adult feed instead. Though food is not the only trigger for messy poo. Sarita has already mention coccidia which is common.
