So, Zeus was digging at the bottom of a curtain yesterday and by some freak accident got one of his front paw nails stuck in the thread of the hem.  My mum and I were able to get him cut free, but not before he freaked out a little and ended up breaking one of his BACK paw nails in the process.   The back nail bled a little bit, but he was ok and it doesn’t seem to be sore or anything.

Did I mention this all happened literally in the middle of moving out of my apartment and into the house my family bought 30 mins away?  So after I was sure he was ok, he had to go for a ride to a house he’d never been in before.  And to top it all off, the AC wasn’t working right so it was over 80F in there for a good 5 hours before we could get it figured out and cooled down. .

He still has a tiny bit of string from the curtain left on his front paw nail.  I’d say about a centimeter at most.  It’s all unraveled so it’s more like just a bit of fiber is left.  I tried tugging it off and it won’t come off.  I don’t want to pull too hard, obviously.  He doesn’t seem to notice it; when I tug he doesn’t care and he is moving around normally and acting totally normal.  So I don’t think it’s stuck up by his toe or anything.

Do you guys think it is ok to just leave it for a few days and see if it comes off on its own?  I really hate to stress him out even more by having to pick him up, burrito him, etc, to try and get it off.  He’s had enough to deal with the last day or so.  I feel like such a bad bunny mom; I tried really hard to make the move as easy as possible on him and it seems like everything just went totally wrong.

If it’s stuck in the blood I think it’ll be okay to leave but if it’s wrapped around his toe I’d be worried about cutting off circulation. Maybe further examination to decide. Idk if he’ll let you with some bribes or not. If its stuck to blood I know sometimes warm water soak will loosen it to where you can pull it without hurting.

BTW, Bunnnnnie! I’ve missed you. Glad to hear from you even if it’s not under great circumstances.

It’s not stuck to blood, the front paw nail didn’t bleed at all, we were able to get him cut loose before he hurt himself.  I can try and take a closer look but not sure if he’ll let me.  I’m fairly certain it’s not wrapped around his toe though, as he lets me tug on the thread and he doesn’t even seem to notice.  I think if it was around his toe and I tugged on it, he’d object.  Also his fur around his paws is totally undisturbed, I’d think if it was around the toe the fur would be sitting funny or trapped under the thread.

Glad to be back to BB, I’ve been away awhile.  Life’s been crazy.  I have new pics though, and I want to get some more pics of Zeus in his new home to share as well.  He’s going to love the new house.  Lots of room to run, and I’m going to have my dad build him a staircase up to the window so he can lounge like he used to on the bay window of the apartment I moved out of.

Awwww, don’t get so down on yourself! Sounds like your freaking out more than your little bunbun is which is a really good sign! No one likes an injured/stressed bun! If you don’t want to freak him out how about giving him his favorite veggie while you try and loop it off? Not sure how well it will work with your bun but one of mine is hyper and for the life of me I can never get him to sit still so the one time I needed him to for a few seconds I had my boyfriend feed him lots of cilantro from his hand while I worked on his toe. LOL. Has his nails been clipped any time soon — if they’re not too short maybe you could just clip that part off really quickly?

Hope it helps! Let me know if you get it off! It seems weird that it would just be stuck though.

Yeah I’m not even sure how it is stuck, his fur keeps me from seeing how it is on there exactly.

I might try and trim the nail to see if that helps.  Luckily I can get my mum to help.  He is settling in very well to the new house.  Like you said, I think I’m more worried than him.  He’s eating and playing like normal, so glad he’s a laidback guy.

I feel your pain — I’m such a baby with my buns. One of our buns injured his foot a little while back and I freaked because he was limping and we took him to Emergency right away. By the time we got there, he was pretty much fine. LOL. They gave him pain meds and sent him home. And OF COURSE, I cried because they took him back without us and I was sooooooo worried. The whole time they let him out and he hopped around and then came home.

And currently, one of our rascals who we got after he was neutered was banded by the breeder we got him from instead of being put up and neutered that way. And after a month n a half of having him I noticed the rubber band is on there still. It’s had me so freaked out that it’s a problem but the vet didn’t seem to worried about it since he’s really active and doesn’t even notice it. They told me to wait until his checkup in a month. Hahaha, typical bunny momma problems.

Btw, your little guy is absolutely stunning! I love floppy ears! All of mine stand straight up.

Ha!  You sound exactly like me.

And thank you!  He’s a cute boy.

                      oOo did you say pics?

I think it would be okay to leave it then if it’s not wrapped around toe or anything. I’m glad to hear he’s adjusting well. I’ll be moving in about a month and even though Bunjamin has a place to stay during the actual move I’m worried how he’ll adjust to a new surrounding.

I figured out how the thread was attached! Finally.

He cracked his front nail, but not enough to break it. The thread is stuck in the crack. It’s far enough away from the quick that I’m hoping it will break off completely on its own. If not, I’ll trim the nail within the next day or two. He’s still getting settled so I didn’t want to stress him out yesterday with a nail trim.

At least I know it’s not hurting him or a risk in any way. Phew!

Thank Goodness! Be careful that he doesn’t snag it on anything else though — it may be better just to get his one bunny nail clipped off so there isn’t a possibility of any more injury. Just clip it right off!
