My two bunnies Aries (11 mos) and Orion ( 7 1/2 mos) have suddenly changed their behavior towards me. I have not spayed them yet and both are female. Orion started biting me and tries to through the cage when I sit near her and when I let her out to the pen she does not want me around at all. For the past 6 months she was calm towards me and happy while being out here. Today was the shocker though because I sat with them in the morning and then went downstairs to prepare for them to come out. When I entered the room again, Orion started to run away frantically in her cage before I can let her out. Ares followed her and even when I left the room, they both continued thumping. It continued for a hour, and I tried again and received the same response. I don’t like this at all, I love my girls and each have their own space but for some reason they don’t want to be around me today. Has anyone experienced this? Or have any suggestions? I am hoping they can interact well with my husband later because they have knocked all their food out of the bowl and he will need to do our nightly routine.

I wouldn’t judge their behavior on this one interaction you had with them today. It’s hard to know why they were thumping – it may not have been you at all. Something else may have set them off.

I would say though that spaying them and age can help calm them down and spaying is important for their health as well. I would make arrangements to get those spays done as soon as you can.

Rabbit’s hearing is extremely good, better than ours. They can hear stuff that we can’t, and that could have set them off.

I second Sartia’s advice and have them spayed when you can. It will help with hormones, and they will become more calm.

I have set up an appt for them to be spayed in 2 weeks. I tried again to enter the room, but as soon as I step in she runs back and forth scared and thumps. She stops when I am downstairs.

Did you change lotion/soap/shampoo/laundry detergent/cologne/deodorant–anything smell differently? Sometimes a new smell can be off-putting and buns are very scent sensitive. Chiming in with LoveChaCha–are you wearing different footwear than normally? Anything that doesn’t sound like “you” to them?

Definitely sounds like a hormonal change. Females can get very territorial and mean when they go through puberty and spaying (plus a couple months to grow out of it) almost always helps.

Sorry for the late response. I figured out the change, well at least to me. My heart valve is much quieter now ( for some random reason) and normally even in a quiet room you can hear it. Its the only difference between and my husband. They have gotten use to this change slowly once they realize that its still me, lol. I can’t really make my ticker louder. In fact, today they have been more affectionate when I play with them. thank you all for your advice !!!!

I know everyone else has said it and I’m happy they are back to being normal with you — but my little girl was very … off-putting of everyone and everything (we got here at 3 months) and she just seemed to get worse, unlike our boys who instantly took to us. She was good at first but never really got better like the other two. And would thump at all the bunny and run like a wild women when any of us would try and talk to her or touch her. However, we recently got her spayed and she is like a TOTALLY different bunny. The difference in her is astonishing. She even climbs on our laps now even though she’s still a little skittish. She’s so much more loving and binkies soooooo much more. So like everyone else, I would definitely say to get them spayed ASAP! Good luck with your little ones in the future!
