I’m looking to pick up some Critical Care for my bun to have just in case when it get closer to the time of having her spayed.  I was wondering what is the shelf life of it?  Does it spoil real easily or will keep for a while and I won’t have to worry about it needing to be replaced?

I’m not entirely sure of the shelf life but it does have an expiration date.

I keep my in the freezer, at one time Oxbow said you could keep it there to keep fresher longer.

However, you may ask your vet if they will sell you “just enough” for in case you need it after the procedure. That way you don’t have to buy a whole big bag. Most vets will do this because they open it up anyway to syringe feed sick animals in their care.

I didn’t know about the freezer to keep it fresh. I got a big bag of it from the BB store within the last year. Maybe BB knows how long it keeps? It’s dry in the bag, so I imagine it might stay pretty long until you mix it with the water to administer. After that it’s only a few days max. for the mushy form you put into the syringe, or the tougher, cookie-like balls you make from it.

Thank you guys. =] I wasn’t too sure if the vet would sell be selling Critical Care or not.

@RabbitPam I didn’t know that you could make cookie-like balls from it. Is there a recipe for it?

Yes, call and ask your vet about critical care – it used to be that was the only place you could purchase it.

Cookie balls…never heard of this either. I always thought the purpose of critical care was that it was a slurry for syringe feeding….

My gut feeling is it expires because A) all products are supposed to have dates on them and B) it contains vitamin C, which even when stabilized, will break down, thus making the nutritional info on the back incorrect past a certain date.

It’s also better safe than sorry; however I would totally try expired critical care in a pinch if it smelled fine; Especially if it’s kept in a freezer.
