My two rabbits were free-range in one room of our house and then could come out to the rest of the house when we were home. Since it was our own home we decided to make it as bunny friendly as possible, after finishing the hardwood floors we didn’t put up trim.  However, we just sold our home and will be renting from now on (at least the next couple of years).  I’m worried now about the transition to free range in a rented home.  Both my S.O. and I would love to have completely free range bunnies, but they seem to be big chewers & diggers.  Are some rabbits just not suitable to free range or others more suitable?  Or is there a method/process to work up to free range?  How do I keep them from chewing baseboards/trim through out the whole house and digging up carpet? (I’m looking for a place with no carpeting).  Leo has destroyed every little carpet square I’ve given them.  He seemed to do ok with the big carpet in living room, but he was only out there when we were home.

If you have a free range rabbit(s), please share how you got to that point and how you got over the digging/chewing.  Thanks.

I’ve had a few free range rabbits and some that I would never allow free range because they were too destructive or not so good with their litter boxes.

I think it just depends on how OCD your rabbit is. If your rabbit has a compulsion to dig carpet or chew baseboards, that may never go away. I think if you have a rabbit that is prone to destruction, they may always be this way…sometimes it’s not a behavior that is easily modified (at least it hasn’t been for me). There is always the suggestion to divert their attention when they are doing things that you don’t think they should do, but what about when you are not there to divert them…I think it could be a challenge. Of course, age MAY help temper their behavior, but there is no guarantee of that.

So, I know that’s not helpful, but I do really believe that some rabbits are just better at being free roam than others.
