I know with switching pellets, you have to do it slowly, but I’ve never heard that was the case with hay?  It seems like I’m going to have to, as when I switch hay, somebun gets a tummy ache.  How long should I spend switching hay? If I do it like pellets, it will be very annoying, since I seem to buy hay every couple of months, and you know, each box/bag is a bit different. I usually have been getting KMShayloft 2nd & 3rd cut Timothy, but I got some local bags from the rabbit group here (helping to support them!).  They use a mix of stuff, which I thought Arduina and Leo would like better.  But I guess they need more transition.  They seemed to be eating it yesterday, but Arduina woke up with a tummy ache (she just needed a little tummy rubbing and her old hay back ). I guess I’ll carry out the mixing until the old hay is gone.

No, you don’t need to do this with hay – maybe if you have a picky rabbit, but otherwise you don’t have to. I’m in the same situation as you and if I had to do that, I probably wouldn’t….

It’s possible the tummy ache was not at all related as well. It may be that she is just finicky about her hay.

Since this seems like a good place to ask this question — my buns are all 5 months old in a few days and my vet suggested to begin weening them on timothy and off the alfalfa now (I had read most places said 7 months). But she said since they are indoor buns and have unlimited alfalfa pellets that it would be okay for them. Thoughts? Also, I buy the Oxbow brand hay — right now we have been mixing Timothy and Alfalfa but I’ve seen the Orchard Blend too. Is that okay to give them all the time or is it like Alfalfa and once they reach a certain age it should only be given as a treat?

Tanlover, I agree with your vet. Any type of grass hay like orchard, timothy, etc…are fine.

Thanks, Sarita! They have pretty much stopped picking through it for the alfalfa so much so I think they’re getting better about it. We don’t plan on giving them anymore alfalfa after this bag is gone.
