        My rabbit ate it.

I swear if anything happens I am NOT speaking to said family member for an eternity.

Hope your bun is OK. Just make sure she is getting plenty of hay and water to help push it through. A trip to the vet and some activated charcoal might help but if it was a small piece with no skin or pit you should be OK. The flesh whilst still toxic is not as bad as the skin and pit. If it was one of the Mexican varieties apparently these aren’t so bad. Just watch her for the next 2 days and possibly give your vet a call.

I think it’s just the leaves that are poisonous.

Avocados are on the HRS list of vegetables/fruits to avoid.
Expect possibly some poopy butt or gas or indigestion, but if he’s fine by now, just make sure it doesn’t happen again. Hopefully his reaction won’t be worse than that. If it is, like he grinds his teeth very loudly and doesn’t move and squints, take him to the vet.

Avocado contains a chemical called persin. It is found in all parts of the plant, but it is most concentrated in the leaves. I did read somewhere that the Mexican varieties are not “as bad”. In large doses, the chemical can cause heart failure in rabbits and other small animals. Apparently, death will occur within 24 hours according to one rabbit vet when I did a google search. So if you bun is fine, then you’re probably in the clear.

I would recommend printing out a list of rabbit safe veggies (and the ones to avoid) and posting it somewhere like the fridge. So if someone wants to give the bun a treat, they’ll be able to check whether or not it’s safe.

^ AGREED. Hope your bun is okay. If someone threw something to my rabbit and didn’t ask first they would be kicked out of my house (in your case maybe rooom?) immediately. A rule that has been agreed upon by my Boyfriend and I due to some of our friends not respecting our buns. You shouldn’t have to worry about people and your buns. It’s a rule people here as soon as they enter. The buns are not to be touched without our permission and there is NO feeding them anything unless it goes through us beforehand.

Any update?? I hope all is OK

I agree-people should ask if it’s OK before feeding your pet. Although avocado is so sneaky, with it’s health benefits for us, and bad for virtually all other animals…harm was not intended but hope it works out!!
