I just adopted a rescue rabbit from a local rescue group. I was told that my Holland lop is about 10 weeks old. I played with him at the adoption event and everything seemed fine, he was great.

I took him home later that day, placed him in his cage (which was already set up) and then… he started sneezing like crazy. He sits on his hind legs, sneezes uncontrollably for maybe a total of about 30 seconds and then rubs his face with his two front paws. He did this on and off last night. It seems that during the day he doesn’t sneeze at all because yesterday during the day he didn’t and today so far he hasn’t either.

So last night I called the rescue I got him from and I was told that he received a clean bill of health from the vet (he was apparently seen twice for the same thing). She says that it only happens to him at night and she’s not sure what it is. She said that since he’s been seen twice by their rabbit specialist (I was told they take their bunnies to the top rabbit vet in our area), that he is healthy. She also said that before he gets neutered in mid-August, they will have the vet check him out again; and to let her know if anything changes with his sneezing pattern/discharge is seen etc. so she could take him back into the vet right away.

        – There is no discharge coming from his nose

        – His nose is completely dry when he is having these sneezing fits

        – Paws have nothing  on them after he wipes his nose with them

        – No dust around his nose area

        – tried whipping his nose off with a napkin and it didn’t help

        – There is no pink around his nose

        – Thinking he might be allergic to the Alfalfa hay he has in his litter box but I know that young rabbits must have Alfalfa in their diet so I wouldn’t know if this is true or not until he ages

My question is this: Has anyone else seen this before, or does anyone have any suggestions? I am also worried that he might have something wrong with him because I know sneezing like that is not normal. If I keep him would that mean I am taking my chances or should I just return him to the rabbit rescue? (BTW, I was not told he had any problems when I adopted him from the rescue, I would have waited to adopt another bunny if that was the case).

You can take him off alfalfa hay if he has alfalfa pellets and try a grass hay.

I agree with Sarita. Try a good quality timothy hay.

Maybe it’s a holland lop thing haha! I have a Holland lop too and he sneezes uncontrollably at times also. It’s usually when he eats hay, he shoves his nose into it and I’m assuming he gets a piece up his nose. Archie’s never had any discharge and has a clean bill of health too. Does he eat more hay at night maybe? I would also do the same and try a different type of hay just to see if that’s it.

I would try changing out any products that they were using with him, in case it is an allergy. Don’t worry about stopping alfalfa – just switch to the timothy. But you might also either wash or replace any bedding/toys/blankies that he was using, as well as switching to a different brand of litter. (I had to use the white Carefresh when we had a problem with allergies.) You’re trying to remove allergens that he may snuggle with at night and cause him sneezing but doesn’t get as near during the day. (I can’t imagine why, though.) If it persists, he needs a second vet opinion I think.

I picked up a bag of alfalfa-based pellets yesterday and gave him a cup-full today. I will wait and see if it helps with his sneezing. I notice that he does sneeze randomly throughout the day as well; is this normal?

Its nothing compared to the sneezing he was doing the first night I brought him home though. I also just left some oat hay in his litterbox to munch on.

I completely cleaned out his cage today and he has only sneezed a few times (nothing in comparison to how he was the first day I brought him home). I also switched the litter he was on (I believe they use this one) and got him this one

Do you know if this litter is okay to use? The Eco-straw is a little pricey and hasn’t really lasted me very long..

The House Rabbit Society says Feline Pine is fine to use with rabbits. You might try a compressed, recycled paper litter like Yesterday’s News–they’re also low dust. Poor guy! I hope the change in diet and litter help him out.
