Lola seems to have had a diet switch and prefers to eat a lot more hay these days….the downside is she is eating a lot less veggies Probably one-packed cup of mixed leafy greens instead of her normal 2-cups.  She used to greedily attack her salads for breakfast and dinner but now seems to just pick at them and leave them to wilt.  I’m not overly concerned because she is consuming a pretty good amount of hay (mostly at night while we are sleeping) and loves some hard homemade treats we give her so I don’t think it’s teeth issues but could there be a reason for the change?  And should I be more concerned than I am?  Thanks in advance!

Hmm. I’m not sure as the cause (maybe you just got an extra tasty bag of hay this time??) but the only thing I’d monitor is if she’s drinking the same amount of water as before or more since she’s not eating as many greens.
Maybe she’s bored with her current selection? Could you try a different green, something she hasn’t had in a while, and see if she’s more excited?

Now that you mention water – I noticed she is DEFINITELY drinking more…..I’d say she went from drinking almost nothing to about a cup every day. Which doesn’t seem like a lot but for a 3 pound bun that drank almost nothing it’s a huge difference.

She’s also had a huge assortment of greens – in fact, I introduced basil and arugula last week and she loved them…but then a few days later lost interest. I obviously can’t change her to a new green every other day so I have no idea what’s going on with her.

Well maybe the next time it’s time to buy greens you could just buy her very favorites, stuff that she always eats and see if she eats her normal amount.

Hay should be 80 to 85% of her diet anyway, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. When teeth issues happen, hay is usually the first thing they STOP eating, whereas here she’s eating more of it. Maybe it’s just tastier hay

I wouldn’t be concerned-you have the rabbit we all want-they eat their dinner and go to bed without asking for desert! That’s perfect!

Thanks for the advice guys. She is now eating “fresh” hay that I buy in a big box from the local HRS instead of Kaytee hay so all the things you have brought up make me think that she is just enjoying that more and since Cinnabun brought up the water consumption it all makes sense.

and don’t be worry – there is nothing to be jealous of….just the crinkle of cellophane or plastic has her running to find you and give you adorable bun eyes and beg for treats!

It sounds like you found a new favorite hay, which also will cause her to drink more water, so both things are very good for her health.

I agree about the greens boredom possibility. Plus, 2 cups is actually a lot of greens, unless it’s more like one cup in AM and one in PM, but still, at only 3 lbs. she may not have the appetite for that much. Try some basics like romaine, 1/2 cup, 2x a day and see if she likes it more. But as the others said, she’s switched to a healthier habit.
