Hi my name is Steph and I am getting a bunny soon but I joined this site to ask questions etc.

So I am getting a dark grey holland tort lop eared bunny. It is currently 4 weeks old and it has been hand picked by the breeders for me. I have the name Anakin in mind, but that could change when I finally meet it. I’m currently preparing myself for this new addition to my family. I’m not sure how to add photos, but I do have a recent photo of my bunny that I will try and post.

I didn’t know where to post this question so I thought I might ask here. I also own a cat, who has been the centre of attention for quite a number of years now. I am very worried about introducing my bunny to my home because of this. Obviously the bunny with be sleeping in a hutch but I’m just worried that my cat might do something to harm it. Does anyone have an advice on this?

Also too I am currently only getting 1 rabbit. I’ve been doing a lot of reading though and I’ve read that some rabbits can get quite lonely. I’m question later on if I should get another rabbit for this reason.

Welcome to BB. Can’t see the pic of your bunny, but hopefully you can post another soon! First, when are you getting your bunny? 4 weeks is really quite young for a baby bunny to be separated from their mom. The normal age for separation is about 8 weeks. For optimal health of your bun, I would wait until at least 8 weeks to bring home your baby. (Anakin is a cute name by the way!) There are other people on this site who have a whole host of other pets with their buns so they can give you advice about your cat. My bun is an only child so I’m not much help there. Bunnies can get lonely but I know lots of bunny owners with only one bun whose buns are quite happy. Mine is, for example. She has lots of toys, lots of free play time, and she has me. I’m around most of the time, except when in classes. If you do decide to get another bunny, wait until you’ve had your first bunny spayed/neutered. There is a lot about bonding on these forums and the site. Can’t wait to see pics!

Yeah I am not getting the bunny for a while, but I’ve chosen it and get weekly updates on how its progressing. I think I’m picking it up in about 4 weeks so yeah. I am trying to figure out how to post pictures haha.

Oh good! I figured since you were getting him from a breeder, the breeder would know better. Weekly updates are great; I did that with Cinnabun too.

Pics: click on the “reply” button to this thread (not the quick reply, but the actual reply) and under the typing section, there is a section that says “Attachments” and go from there. It’s really simple.

Yeah I’m a first time rabbit owner but its something I’ve wanted for a long time. My brother’s girlfriend’s family breeds them and are giving me one for free, but obviously I have to pay for its vet bills and stuff before I get it. I am so excited. They message me all the time updating me. I was like a proud mummy when they told me it started hopping. I can’t wait to meet it though =)

OMG! She’s simply adorable! I bet you can’t wait to get her! I don’t blame you. I actually have 3 cats and just recently (at the end of March) brought 2 buns home to live. At first, I just let the cats sniff the buns through the cage. 2 of the cats were more afraid of the bunnies than they were of them! Ha! ha! My third (and youngest) cat was very interested in them. When the buns were a bit older (about 12 weeks old, I think) I started letting one of the cats in the room during playtime. The two older ones were just rather bored with the buns and would run away when a bun came to check them out. When I decided to let Simba (my youngest cat) in, I had to really watch him closely because he wanted to play too rough with them. He was never “mean” to them, but just wanted to get a little too rowdy sometimes. I started out very slowly with him and would always end the session on a good note (for example, if they were all relaxed in each others presence). Now, they all get along great! My bunnies don’t have free run of the house when I’m not home so they are never left unsupervised with the cats, though. Also, my buns are not small bunnies (they are both about 6 lbs now…and still growing) so that might make a difference, too. There are so many people on here (BB) that have rabbits living together with other animals, so it’s definitely possible. Just be sure to continue to give your kitty lots of attention when the bunny comes. Mine were jealous and I realized it was because I was so taken with the buns that I wasn’t giving them enough “personal” time.

Regarding the idea of getting another bunny: I have read on this site and others that alot of times, a single bunny will bond more closely with you (the human) if they don’t have a bunny partner. I don’t have too much experience with that because I got both my buns at the same time as babies. But I can tell you that I think they prefer each others company rather than snuggling up to me. *sniff sniff* So..if she bonds with you and is a happy bunny then I don’t think another bunny is a necessity. Lots of people only have one bun and they do quite well. She will very likely miss her littermates at first, but she’ll come to see you as her new mommy in a short time.

The name you picked out is beautiful. It really fits her, I think. Does it have a special meaning to you? Good luck! And I can’t wait to see more pics of her!!

                          Hi there, and welcome

As a bunny mom that has her little girl since she was 8 weeks of old, single rabbits are not bad at all. My bunny is now 2 1/2 years old, and she is truly very funny. We have a very unique bond, and she is very demanding of her human slaves, and very generous with her thank you returns (KISSES). As long as you provide lots of toys, are very easy going with bonding (sitting and ignoring bunny, so bunny goes to you and learns to trust you), you should be fine with a single rabbit.

Thanks for all the welcomes and advice! Really appreciate it =)

My cat is very playful when it comes to other animals like lizards and mice. She even took on a snake once & would go a dog any time, so I guess thats why I’m a little worried about my bunny interacting with my cat =/

Oh and the name is from a character from Star Wars. Its Darth Vader’s name before he goes to the dark side. I’m a bit of a nerd like that. I’m not even sure if my bunny is a boy or a girl yet, but hopefully I’ll find out soon. Thanks again for all the tips. I’ll be sure to post photos when I get my bunny

Welcome to you. Your bunny is incredibly cute!!!!

I have 3 small rabbits and 2 cats. When I brought my first rabbit home I just let them spend supervised time together. I actually had 4 cats at the time and they were all not even that interested in the bunny. My bunnies are definitely in charge of the cats, they totally boss them around. I’m more worried about the buns biting the cats than the other way around. Stormy will try to bite their tails if they wag it near him.

Welcome, Steph! Your bun is SOOOO cute! I don’t have any other animals with my buns — but I think you can have a very rewarding relationship with your bun that doesn’t include others if you don’t want. My first bun we got when he was 8 weeks old also and for a month he only had us! We spent so much time with him and now he’s the most interactive of our little guys. We decided to get more but only because we loved them all and thought they were SOOO adorable but we thought it may be better for him to socialize with his own bunfriends too. Just be prepared — that if you get 2 bunnies they may not even like each other! So if you do decide to get another — you could do what we did — we took our little guy with us and let him pick out who he wanted! It was a perfect fit and the third of our buns we got because we were in love with them all. We took the whole litter our breeder had except for one which she kept to show. Hahah.
