I’ve been getting hay from my brother-in-law, he has horses so He bring us half or a 1/4 bail of hay when we need it. Velvet seems to love it and eats it up, AND, seems good as far as poop goes,( hard not loose). But, I keep seeing where you should use Timothy Hay, instead of alfalfa. Why is that. I’ve given her Timothy Hay, but, don’t see a difference…………………………….

Is it a mix? If it’s a mix with alfalfa that should be fine.

However the majority of a rabbits diet should be grass hay which includes timothy, orchard, bluegrass, etc…especially with a long haired Jersey Wooly. A little alfalfa for a Jersey would be fine but it’s just a supplement more like a treat rather than replacing grass hays.

Grass hay is what aids in digestion and it also helps keep their teeth healthy as well…so it’s pretty important stuff.

Yes, I think it’s a grass hay mostly, but, she seems to love it. I put corn cob litter  (from Wal-Mart to soak up pee) on bottom of litter box, then put the hay on top. She sits and eats doing her business, I also keep a 6″X 12″ tupperware container full of fresh by her bed or sleep area. She sits and munches all day on it!

So, grass alfalfa or hay is fine then? It’s very nice and green like grass.

Well alfalfa is not a grass hay, it is a legume so it does not replace a grass hay. It is fine as a supplement or treat though.

So if it’s mixed in with the grass hay and she is still eating plenty of the grass hay, it is fine.

I don’t recommend corn cob litter though – if she eats corn cobb hay it can cause an impaction. If they sell Aspen bedding at Walmart then that would be perfectly fine.
