So I recently attempted to grow some lettuce for my little bunn:

she seems to love it – just left the box in her pen this afternoon and she keeps hopping over and having a little munch. This is the one thing which makes me feel bad about keeping her as a house rabbit – that she cant dig at and munch at “green stuff”. So is there any other home-grown plants I could attempt in order to give her variety??

What kind of lettuce is that? Is it full grown?

I live in apartment and I have a mix green variety, romaine, and dandelions growing in the sun room. I cut off a bunch when it grows back, and bunny adores it.

I can’t remember what type of lettuce it’s meant to be, or if its actually fully grown there – it was just a cheap box set I picked up from a £ store!

There are many, many types of greens you can plant in containers for your bun. The Burpee seed packets I got this year have a nice little icon on the front indicating whether a plant can be put in containers. Most herbs, of course, work well for that: especially parsley, cilantro, mint, basil, and thyme. Some of the veggies I bought that can can be planted in a container are: Broccoli Rabe (also called Rapini); Bright lights chard; Baby Bok Choy; Batavian Endive; Senposai (an Asian green); Arugula; and Dwarf Blue Kale. All of these are rabbit-safe, although I might have to limit some according to the HRS guidelines.

Be sure you have a big enough pot to accommodate the plant’s root system and with plenty of drainage, put them in a sunny location, and you should do fine!

Burpee is a good brand of seed. I highly recommend the brand. Also, if you find Burpee, pick up the Cat Grass Seed. It is bunny safe, and like bunny drugs

I planted basil, cilantro and parsley indoors. I planted them in seedling containers and I’m going to transplant them to a big herb box when they are mature enough. On sunny days, I put the containers outside.

I do plant some things, but my bunnies get tons of veggies every day (mostly from the grocery store) so they get a lot of green stuff. What else do you feed her?

For home grown things, I grow parsley and lettuce and share it with the buns. I grow a number of other things, but mostly things they don’t want to or shouldn’t eat (tomatoes, zucchini, etc). Once it gets cool again I’ll have to start kale and other greens for the buns.
