I’ve been trying to get Thane castrated for about a year now. He’s always had an issue with UTIs. The last vet I took him to told me he has an ulcerated rectum. I gave him antibiotics and a pain killer for a week and things seemed great.

Now he’s back to the same antics. Peeing everywhere, especially outside his litter tray. Could the wood chips be upsetting his sore butt.

Plus he runs around in circles chasing his butt and honking dropping little ‘balls of excitement’

Has anyone had ongoing issues with their pet before? What did you do? I feel like a terrible bun mammy not being able to fix the problem!

This must be terribly frustrating for you.

Has your vet ever done a urinalysis? I think that the peeing outside the litter box might also be that he is not castrated as well…actually all those behaviors sound related to hormones more than anything else.

Are you planning on getting him castrated soon?

If there’s a chance that the shavings are irritating his condition, I would switch to softer litter. I used Carefresh – the white stuff, when Spockie had something going on and I had allergies to some litters. It works well but is softer, so he might find it soothing as he finally heals. It’s a bit more expensive, but not that much.
Both my bunnies, if they didn’t like their litter, peed outside the pan. I doubt that’s why he does it, but switching couldn’t hurt.

He sounds normally hormonal to me too. If his condition makes it unsafe to neuter, you may have to live with him as is for a lot longer. But if he is a single bunny with no chance of meeting a girl, he can be fine. Continue to treat the UTI until the vet gives you the green light on the procedure. If you think your vet isn’t up to it, or just want a second opinion, check out the list of Vets in the post pinned to the top of the Q&A forum section. You might need an exotics vet who’s a bit more experienced with rabbits.

Good news! Vet agrees and only thing we can do is neuter. His infection has cleared and he just has a sore bottom. He’s booked for next Thursday.

My vet is fantastic, they specialise in bunnies. I have only recently been visiting them as they’re quite far out and expensive. But yay!

Awesome!! I would ditto Pam, with rear end pain, it would be nice to switch to carefresh especially for after the neuter
