        Can bunnies be microchipped?

I don’t feel comfortable having a collar on Penelope or tattooing our address on her ear.

The only other option is microchipping.

I’m afraid my little Penny may be stolen, wander outdoors, be lost or get loose among train/airline luggage, abducted by man-eating aliens, etc.

I just want to ensure she’ll be returned to me if any such disaster happens.

I was wondering this too the other day. It would be great if they could be micro-chipped.

They can microchip rabbits. I don’t know however if it’s standard procedure for shelters to check rabbits for chips or vet offices…

I’ve discussed it with my vet before, but I never take my rabbit’s outside ever so I don’t worry about it.

I adopted my bunny from a GREAT humane society which actually had him neutered and microchipped. It was done before I even adopted him and before we left, just to make sure he was safe they checked for the chip and easily found it so I know that some do and it works just fine.

I would just look into somewhere around you, I’m sure you would be able to get it done pretty easily and it’s a fast thing, they just get a shot. It made me feel so much better just because you never know what accidents could happen. good luck!

It’s not standard procedure to scan lost rabbits for microchips, so I don’t think it would be all that effective in most cases. I know my local rabbit rescue doesn’t check, and I would assume the humane society doesn’t since they rarely get rabbits and don’t know much about them.

My rabbits don’t go outside, so I didn’t get a microchip.

My little guy was also neutered and chipped by the shelter when he was brought in. They even litter-trained him too before he was put up for adoption.

When I was completing the adoption process, they checked him to make sure his chip was working too.

I don’t ever let my guy out, and he stays as far away as he can from any open doors or windows, but I do feel better knowing he is chipped just in case he gets scared and bolts just as a door is opened and does manage to get outside in the wild world.

Rosie’s ear is tattooed but if she’s ever lost don’t know how that would really help. Microchipping seems like a great idea. She would never be left alone especially outside but you you never know what could happen.

All three of mine a chipped and have a small tattoo in one ear that is different form the desexing tattoo in the other so if they ever get out the shelters and vets know to check for a chip.

Rupert is apparently microchipped, but the shelter I adopted him from also said they x-rayed him and they didn’t; so I’m not sure. I was actually kicking myself for not getting him scanned when we were at the vet to see if he really is chipped. My vet has a reader, that even if it can’t read the information, can tell you if there is a chip -that’s the problem with chips is you need the right reader to read it, so if they have a chip you might have to vet-clinic-hop to find the right reader! Anyways-I thought thats timely as I was just wondering again if he really is chipped-we’re going in soon for a re-check so I’ll try to remember to have them check!
