I’m going to try to “deep clean” Usagi’s cage.  I read in the Rabbits USA magazine that you can use a 1:10 bleach:water solution to clean his toys and bowls, etc. and then let them sit in it for 15 minutes and then rinse them off really well.  Then to clean the cage you can use a 1:32 bleach:water solution and rinse that off as well. Does this sound safe?  Any other suggestions on “deep cleaning?” Thanks!

If you dont want to use bleach, you could try Peroxide, it will still kill most of the germs but since it “decomposes” into water and oxygen you dont have to worry about toxic residue. I use this for most of my cleaning, only breaking out the bleach when absolutely nessecary. You also dont have to worry about diluting it (if you get the kind available in drug stores) just pour some on, let sit, scrub then rinse off.

Honestly, I just use vinegar. It’s non toxic, and cleans very well. And, its super cheap

I agree with Monkeybun. A good way to deep clean is get a bucket with vinegar and water and use a scrubby sponge on the floor.

Okay I think I will just use vinegar and water then. That’s what I use when I do my weekly clean. Should I soak the toys in it too?

I use a mild vinegar solution and a scrubby brush to clean grubby plastic toys.

Vinegar is great! i wash everything bunny related in it and it works wonders. I soak his litterbox in a half water half vinegar solution and it always comes out brand new!

Yeah, I’d do vinegar too. You could use it in a much more concentrated form if you’re going to rinse everything with water and dry it afterwards, rather than the standard 50/50 water/vinegar blend.

Thanks! I think I may try doing a more concentrated blend to clean his cage and toys. I’m doing it today while he’s at the vet being neutered. I’m so nervous, but I’m sure he will be just fine! The vet is great, and they’ve done many rabbit neuterings

Oddly enough, when I used bleach to deep-clean my buns cages residue was still left on the bottom from their urine. Since only one of our buns is neutered currently, they had a lot of accidents in the beginning (even though they’re doing better), the bleach would not take out the residue! When I used the white vinegar however the residue came right off! I was kind of shocked really since I was sure bleach would be the better of the two.

I love the white vinegar and water, but for the stained sections of the litter pan, I pour a small, covering amount on the area, then sprinkle a bit of baking soda on it. It fizzes. Once it soaks a minute or so, I scrub the stain until it comes free and is back to basic litter pan. Then I rinse it very thoroughly, since the baking soda isn’t toxic but it’s not good to ever be ingested. Don’t use it to clean the toys. Just the vinegar and water mix. Rinse toys well so they don’t smell bad. (Vingar solution is also used as a spray deterrent to chewing on things like baseboards because of the smell.)

I was always under the impression that you never use bleach on anything for bunnies whether diluted or not. 50/50 vinegar definitely does a great job with cleaning, getting rid of odor and especially stains.

white vinegar + water & a squirt of dish soap works magic. I use bleach though on my kitchen floor and his pen area because it won’t get clean or stay white otherwise ( cheap linoleum yay ) but I steam mop it after I’ve bleached it and won’t let him go in the kitchen until its dry. But in his pet store cage and litter box I just use the vinegar + water + dish soap because only vinegar removes the urine from his litter box
