Hey! So I have 2 rabbits , each around 2 years old. I heard that pellets were made only for meat rabbits. Do you think a no pellet diet is better then a diet with pellets? Do you like a no pellet diet? Does your bunny(s) like a  no pellet diet? Have you ever tried a no pellet diet? Do you need to increase the amount of veggies you give them if you take them off pellets? ( Each day they get 4 cups of veggies) By the way i give them 1/4 a cup of pellets each daily. Thanks.

There are many different thoughts on the no pellet diet and I really think it depends on each particular rabbit and many vets do think that pellets are not necessary and they are certainly the very smallest part of a healthy adult rabbit’s diet.

The majority of my rabbits are on a no pellet diet and they do get alot of veggies. However, I always always recommend that any rabbit owner discuss this with their vet. Most vets are on board with the no pellets but it’s always good to get your vet’s consent.

My bunny is 2 1/2 years old, is on a pellet diet, but she only gets 1 teaspoon a day, hay all day, and 3-4 cups of veggies a night. I consider pellets a vitamin supplement to a rabbit’s diet.

If you wish for your bunnies to be on a pellet less diet, I would discuss it with your vet. If the vet gives the green light, you will need to feed your rabbit many types of vegetables a day, so that they get all the nutrients they need. The forum owner, BinkyBunny, had her bunny on a pellet less diet, and fed her bun about 10-14 different types of veggies a day.

Describing pellets as a vitamin supplement is very accurate. Lots of people give just a small amount of HIGH QUALITY timothy pellets so they have all the nutrients they need (plus most buns like pellets). If you were to go completely pellet-free, you’d need a very wide variety of veggies. I second what Sarita said about asking your vet about the pros and cons.

I think if you cut it down to 1/8th cup a day it would be very much like the vitamin supplement comparison. Then you would not have to have as great a variety of veggies to compensate. BB’s bunny went off pellets due to a sensitive GI condition. Many bunnies are taken off them after an illness or problem, but a healthy bunny can have a small daily amount to insure the nutrients are all getting in.

And yes, discussing with your vet is a great way to get a healthy and steady meal plan.
