        Okay.

I bought a dog bone for my boyfriend’s dogs to share. I had it next to me and I totally forgot about it. Penelope jumped up on the couch, and I assumed she wanted to be petted so I petted her. In a flash, Penelope sniffed, grabbed, and ran with the treat in her mouth. She ran at the speed of light as if she held a winning lottery ticket. I laughed, took the treat from her, and she didn’t nibble off too much because the ‘bone’ is as hard as rock.

The treat is mainly oats and rice (which is probably why she wanted it) but has lamb in it. I think she’ll be fine.

        Riiiiiiiiiiight?

She’s racing around like her normal spazzy and hyperactive self.

Ingredients are at the bottom (lamb&rice flavor):

        Original Bakery Biscuits (24 Count)

I know garlic is listed in the ingredients. I know it’s (ironically) bad for dogs when fed in certain amounts. Not sure about rabbits…

She should be fine, just watch her for any signs of bloat/not pooping etc. There are rabbits that were rescued fed dog food their entire lives though, as well as some people have had people steal dog/cat food from the other pets. So even if it’s not good for them, it’s not usually toxic.

I ditto Sticker. Probably won’t bother her. When Stormy was a baby he used to love sneaking pieces of cat food.

Buck eats dog food and treats all the time. I’ve just come to accept that their one of his little treats. As long as it doesn’t effect his behavior or poop/health – I’ve given up worrying about it. I know it might not be something you try to do but it happens and I’m not going to take away free time for him to not eat any. I do chase him away when he does it so I think he knows it’s a no-no.

If it makes my bun happy and doesn’t affect him negatively, I don’t care.

With dog food, probably a few incidents is not going to be a big deal, but it is something that is best not to have as a daily part of their intake due to the higher protein and fat.   We had this discussion several years ago and the question was then asked to Dana Krempels.  The question might have even been from me (can’t remember).  Anyway here is her take on this http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/Rabbit-eating-dog-food.htm   She also admits that some bunnies love dog food, , and while short term health may not be an issue, it’s the long-term health that can be potentially compromised.  So, it’s just something to keep in mind.

BB, when I say all the time, I really only mean like once a week. Buck lives with my boyfriend, and the dogs are just mine and live with me. It feels like it’s all the time because it’s only when I’m there but it’s not even every weekend.

In return, the dogs also steal the bunny treats. I made them myself and all my animals love them! I love that I can do it so easily.

                    THEN…
                    It’s a good thing most dog/cat foods are primarily corn, I guess…

I gave my bf the dog bone. He laughed when I told him the story.
Penelope is pooping and eating just fine.
                    Thanks, guys!

Primarly Corn???   Any dog or cat food that is primarly corn is not only not fit for a bunny, but it’s not fit for dog or cat either.   Maybe we are just more alert as our cat has a grain allergy (though we’ve seen more rice, not corn) Anyway we cannot feed food with any grain or he gets all icky and flakey

I always thought corn was less harmful than meat for bunnies. That is why I commented that.

It’s horrible for cats and dogs, but the truth is, most commercial dog and cat foods are junk.

Friskies/Purina/Science Diet are always on television, and thousands (if not more) people religiously buy it for their pets… Little do they know that they are doing more harm than good.

off topic- I wrote a college paper on commercial vs raw vs high grade dog food.

I buy really good quality cat food, its all natural and grain-free but I have a cat who lived 21 years on Friskies.
