Hi I recently brought a lionhead in April and I try to let her out of her cage as much as possible but every time I let her out she starts to chew the woodworks and the walls. She doesn’t chew the walls every minute she is out of the cage but she still has done a lot of damage in the little time I have had her. I tried clapping but that does not faze her anymore. I have brought her many chew sticks and a chewable tunnel. She chews on those sometimes but she still chews the walls more. Today my mother brought me a bottle of Hartz Clean Earth Chew Prevention Spray. Does anybody know if this will be okay to use the spray on my bunny’s favorite chew spots. The ingredients listed on the bottle are water, bittering agent, Alcohol(Derived from Corn) and preservatives. I don’t want to make her sick and I also do not want all the walls in my house to be destroyed so I need to find a solution fast. Thanks

I don’t know about the spray but I do have another suggestion – Lola went through a few day phase where she’d chew on our wood endtables and coffee table and I read somewhere on the forum to spray body spray (like the kind from Bath and Body Works) on a paper towel and rub it on areas where you don’t want your buns.  This worked for Lola!  Apparently, the smell is way over-powering to their little noses and they steer clear.  It worked for me and might be worth a shot.  You could also try getting a water bottle that has a “stream” spray on it and spray your bun when they start to chew.  This also works wonders with Lo….but every bun is different and it just comes down to trying to figure out what works for your destructo bun!

I do the same thing that bmt87 did. I also will use soap and rub that on places she likes to chew. She hates the smell and the taste and it’s enough to drive her away. If both these things don’t work, you could try a water pistol. One shot across the bum or back when you see her doing something you don’t like and soon enough she’ll get the message. Most buns don’t enjoy getting wet.

After moving into an apartment, Chacha bun had to get used to the new environment. She chewed the baseboards, and what I used was: Grandma’s Perfume. She didn’t like the smell, and never chewed a baseboard since.

You can try it, but it may or may not work. I’ve used bunny specific products with some success – they generally use citrus oil as the deterrent.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. I am going to start trying each one out to see what works best for Daisy. All of your bunnies are so adorable

I rubbed my brother’s Axe deodorant on the window sill to deter the bunny from chewing. Works like a charm!

I’m so glad to see these posts. I was just about to ask the same question. Murphy is a wire chewer. I am now without TV. I will try the parfume idea! Thanks for putting this question out there

Best idea for cords is to block them off completely. And use cord covers!

I’ve read that some pets actually like the taste of the bitter apple spray sold in pet shops…

I tried fooey spray…. the bunnies didn’t seem to care at all. It worked for the dogs though! It really did taste horrible though, I got some on my hands and then ended up eating something, I felt like my tongue was assaulted by every nasty taste known. It also made my tongue a bit tingly.
