Should I get the pain relief injection to get Usagi neutered?

They should include this. Are you asking for afterwards? Most of the time the males bounce back very quickly – the pain meds they give them for the procedure are generally enough for the males…females will need pain meds for a few days afterwards.

Well it’s an additional cost if you want the pain med. I thought I would get it, and I thought it was kind of strange that it was an addditional cost, but I guess that’s just how they work. So I probably should get it, is that correct?

They usually give them one after surgery which lasts all day, then they might send you home with metacam – if they will give you metacam I would get some just in case. Most males are OK without them, but my male was a baby about the pain – he kept his little tail lifted and that part of his body on the A/C vent to keep it cold and moped about for a week after surgery, my girl was doing binkies 3 days after and I had to watch her to make sure she didn’t pull her stitches. lol

When Wilbur was spayed the vet gave her something for pain at the time of the spay and then sent me home with 3 days worth of Meloxicam (Metacam). Definitely get the pain meds, while boys may usually bounce back faster then girls, surgery is surgery and it’s painful. Good luck with the neuter!

I would definitely get metacam for after the surgery, both my girls, and my boy Squirrel, needed it.

Oh, yeah, get the pain meds for the procedure – are they saying it’s optional? Or are you looking at an itemized break down of the costs?

It’s an additional cost for the pain injection which I’m going to do. They don’t give the rabbit medication for after the surgery such as a Metacam, but I asked if the pain injection is for before the surgery or after so we’ll see…

Does this vet see alot of rabbits? My vet gives pain injections to do tooth trims and for afterwards too if needed. I cannot imagine a pain medication not being apart of the procedure….

Yeah this vet sees a lot of rabbits, and has done a lot of neutering and spaying for rabbits. I know they let the rabbit eat before the surgery so that’s good. Is there another type of pain reliever that’s out there that could help him after the surgery?

There are a number but Metacam seems to be the most popular and it’s easy to administer – they normally like the taste – it’s kind of a sweet honey flavoring. In the old days I used to get rimadyl.

My new vet advised that the pain meds are a standard part of the spay/neutre process and was included in the cost. I have 4 little girls to have spayed in the next two months so that was a huge relief to hear.

So the pain injection is for after the surgery so I guess it is there form of pain medication. I think I’m going to plan on getting that for him because it’s surgery so I want him to have some type of pain reliever.

it only lasts the day I believe, so if you want extra for the days after, get the metacam too.

Many times the injection is buprenorphine…I have no idea when it’s given during the procedure…I’ve always thought it was before the procedure, but I could be wrong.

I would definitely say get the one that they inject that lasts for the surgery and the day after. The vet I went to was recommended by San Diego House Rabbit Society and didn’t prescribe Metacam afterwards and I was REALLY concerned but Lola ended up being fine – the injection before the surgery was more than enough to get her through the next day. As long as you are going to a bunny-savvy vet I would say they know what they are doing. Good luck on the surgery!

i just got parsley desexed on monday and i would definitely recommend the extra pain med, they injected one that lasted until lunchtime the day after surgery and he has been completely fine, no sign of pain at all and has been bouncing around like his normal self since the moment he came home he’s not to pleased about being cooped up atm thou lol

My vet charged for a pain med to take home with me after the surgery when my bunny was coming home, and it was Metacam. I think most vets include the price for pain med during recover, but once they are ready to be released it’s your option to buy a bit more for the night and next day or two. I would opt for that.

I have seen spay and neuter procedures broken down in many different ways so I would not assume that the pain meds are included in the actual procedure – that is why you need to get clarification on what is included – is the actual procedure just for the procedure or is it for the anesthesia, pain meds, yada, yada, yada. My current vet breaks everything down when you get the itemized bill, other vets have not.

As far as I can tell there seems to be no standards for billing when it comes to vets or prices. Some vets have totally different protocols too than others…it’s just how they were taught.

I would be going with extra pain meds and extra fluids. On Rufus last op my mum dropped him off and forgot to tick the extra fluids box and he took a lot longer to recover then normal. Also Bugz got no extra meds with his neutering and look a while to recover but both Anya and Rufus had extra meds and took them no time at all.

                                                Sarita,

When my girl was spayed they gave her a shot of Metacam before surgery and buprenex after surgery. She did not need any additional pain meds until the next morning.
