I’ve had my bunny since February and she’s the sweetest little thing. About a month after I got her, I took her to the vet because she was twitching her head a lot. The vet determined she had allergies and said to give her children’s Benadryl twice a day. The only problem is Fran hates the stuff and will only eat it when masked by a banana which I only do about every other day, if that. However, about a week ago I noticed a sore on Fran’s nose. I left her with my cousin for a week while I was on vacation and when I got back her nose was worse — a couple sores, and very red. I don’t know if this is residual from her allergies or if she scratched herself and is making it worse by constantly cleaning herself. I’ve been upping her Benadryl and using a saline cleans. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m trying to find a good vet around here (was up at school for the other vet).

          Welcome to Binky Bunny

Awhh poor bunny! I’ve never heard of bunny have sores on its nose from allergies. It sounds like she does need to go see a rabbit savvy vet, have you checked with the House Rabbit Society’s list of rabbit savvy vets? Here’s the link http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

          She is absolutely precious btw.

Thanks for the link. I did find a vet through one of the links on this site but I haven’t heard back from them (asked me to “request an appointment” online. I’ll try calling tomorrow.

How did the vet determine that she has allergies?

If she has a lot of snot on her nose, that might be irritating her skin and making her scratch too much. Other than that, I’m not sure why she would get sores. It does sound like she needs to see a rabbit-savvy vet about this.

Also, if you’re certain that she really has an allergy, you might want to ask about using liquid childrens’ Benadryl instead of pills. I think that there are also some flavored allergy medicines for dogs that a bunny could take.

He checked her ears and there was nothing there that would cause the twitching, and I suppose her nose was a little runny and it was the beginning of allergy season so allergies made sense.
I have a cherry flavored liquid allergy medicine for her now, I don’t think I could use pill form because she can only have 8ml doses.
I think the saline solution helped a bit. I just really hope I can get more definitive answers from this new vet.

I would have her checked thoroughly by a new vet where you live now. If it’s allergies, you’ve put her into 2 new environments so you want to try to determine if it’s something that’s traveling with her, such as her litter or hay. If not, you also want to confirm that it really is allergies and not another illness since it’s getting worse.

Not crazy about a steady dose of children’s benadryl for long. A rabbit savvy vet (Exotics) should be able to make sure this is really what’s wrong and give her medication to treat it for a quicker healing. It might need a drop of a salve to recover from chafing. (Bag Balm or neosporin, for example of safe ones.) Do not administer anything on your own before your appointment, but you sound like you’re taking good steps to get her well again.

Hey guys, thanks for all your input. I did get Francine to a rabbit savvy vet today, and they did a really thorough job with her. They determined that it’s not allergies, but an infection. We’re not sure if it’s fungal, viral or bacterial, but they gave me 2 medicines to treat bacterial and fungal infections. (Just gave Fran her first dose — not a pleasant experience!) Hopefully things will start to clear up within a week.

Please keep us updated! I’m glad you got a 2nd opinion, because allergies are not common at all in rabbits.

Guys, I am beyond frustrated. Francine won’t take her medicine, and now she won’t even let me pick her up. She attacking me whenever I do anything. I don’t know what to do.

I would get her in the bathroom where she is confined and sit on the floor and if you need to wrap her in a towel. I know she hates it and she’ll never love it but you have to do it. Once you get the hang of what works it will be easier.

Roberta: she’s about 5 maybe 6 months. I got her in February and they didn’t know exactly how old she was.

Sarita: Good advice. I’ll try that. Thanks!

                                      Hey Guys!

Just wanted to give you a positive update: Francine’s nose (although not fully healed) is really improving. She’s a little mad at me and won’t let me take her picture, but I’ve finally found effective ways to give her the medicines and I’m hopeful for a full recovery in the near future. Thanks for all the support!
