Our little furry guy Jasper has flakiness in the back of his ears.

I thought it was either him from scratching or fur mites. We went to have his nails cut and noticed his ears. I put Vitamin E on them. He stopped scratching, just usual grooming.

I heard Vitamin E would help with dry skin/fur mites.

My question is do rabbit get dry flaky skin during summer or is this only associated with fur mites?

I will take him to the vet this week if the scratching or flakes persist.

It sounds like mites to me. I would have him checked out by a vet.

Olivia has flaky skin at the base of her ears and above her eyes. It seems to flare up from time to time. I had her checked and its not fur mites. I think some rabbits are just like people and they have drier skin. I would suggest getting the skin checked because flaky skin is the main symptom of mites and, if it is mites, you want to get it cleared up asap. If its just dry skin, you can do some at-home remedies.

I take a soft baby brush and gently brush the dry areas to loosen the flakes and then I take a small dab (just a dab!) of mineral oil and massage it in. This works very well with Olivia.

              Thanks for the info.
His ears are actually better now, the fur is growing back and not that flaky. He doesn’t look look like Mr. Bigglesworth anymore. I have a baby brush we usually groom him with. We used that and the vitamin E oil. He seems to be getting happier and and we feel better about that.
He still has a checkup with his vet this weekend just to be sure its not mites.
