Lola eats the timothy hay, but it’s the Kaytee brand from Walmart..it feels dry..almost like a bunch of sticks..she’s been eating that for awhile but I feel she’d enjoy something not as hard. I got her a bag of some kind of timothy from the pet store in town but it was so expensive, about $15 for a small bag, the Kaytee is about $6-$7 for a huge bag.

Anyway, I’m rambling haha..what kind of hay do you feed your buns? And where do you get it? Also she’s only 5 months, almost 6 if that matters at all.

I really wouldn’t even mind having to order it online, if it’s good and the price is also..

          Are there any feed stores?

Kaytee is horrible, horrible hay. It is dusty, and my bunny snubs it. I buy American Pet Diner online (pricey, but she is picky) and I’ve bought hay from a local hay grower (which is cheaper).

I feed my girl 2nd cut Timothy Hay (she likes the soft hay), and 2nd cut Orchard grass.

Is 2nd cut softer than first cut? I get my buns hay and a local agway ( which is a farm/hardware store) they have a few different brands of hay but i bought a huge bag when i first got my bun (i forget the brand i got)….which was in january and i still have the bag its only half way gone and it cost around $16.

I just googled and we have a feed store right down the street from my house, not even a half mile. I feel dumb for not thinking of it.

Just make sure you get horse quality hay — not cattle quality.

2nd cut tends to be soft, 3rd cut is even softer! 1st is coarse. Rabbits do have preferences, as a matter of fact! Some aren’t too picky, but some are! I can prove that one, hahaa!

The first bag of hay I got my bunny was the kaytee brand, he didn’t seem to mind it but I did not care for how dry and dusty it was. I switched him to oxbow brand hay, I think it’s first cut timothy hay. It is about $10 for a 40 oz bag. I’ve been looking for some cheaper options as well but haven’t found any yet and I don’t have a lot of storage. I like the oxbow brand because it tells you on the bag the types of hay that are softer or more coarse. They also have smaller bags so I can give try out a new type without spending too much at first. My bun eats anything though, especially if I’m eating it, he thinks it should be his too. It’s hard to eat dinner on the couch now because he has to jump up and see what I have!

I get my bunnies hay from a farmer that lives not too far away from where I am. it’s five dollars a bale and it lasts a LONG time. It’s also better quality hay than the bagged hay that you buy at the store. The only downside is sometimes it has moths in it. which is more a nuisance for me than it is for the bunnies.
I used to buy oxbow but now my bunnies won’t eat it anymore if I buy it. They only eat the baled stuff now haha!

Justbun – if you don’t have much storage you can buy a tall cardboard box to store hay in if you want to get it from a feed store. Or a couple of those wal-mart plastic bins and poke a few holes in them, then stack them. I use one of the plastic bins and a cardboard box. Or you can find someone who has horses and they will usually let you buy just a flake or two off a bale they have.

Lola – I use atm Brome hay from a local horse owner. He works with my boyfriend so he gave us the hay free, since one bale is not much to him when he has 6 or so horses. lol For treat hays I have oxbow oat, botanical and orchard grass.

I usually purchase American Pet Diner Timothy Gold – 2nd cut or KMS Hayloft 3rd cut when it’s avaiable – shipping is expensive however if you figure what you COULD buy in the store, for the sizes they carry, it’s worth it because I imagine they figure the cost of shipping somehow in the price you have to pay.
