I’m trying to add a little more variety to rabbit’s diet. I’m hoping to add spinach to their diet twice a week. I was just wondering how much to add. I don’t want to add too much. Does anyone have any idea about how many leafs to add? One is a 4lb mini Rex (about 4 ½ years old) and the other is a 5-6lb Holland lop mix (a little over 6 years). They are both spayed females, not sure if that matters or not.

Right now they are getting 2 cups daily of:

        Baby carrot (one each)

        Boston lettuce

        Cilantro

        Escarole

        Red leaf lettuce

Because spinach is high in oxalic I usually give a very small handful of baby spinach 1-2 times a week and rotate it out / in over the year, so they will go a month or so without sometimes.

I am so glad you asked this question because I can now use my new found knowledge about this as the HRS just recently put up an updated diet info.   Since now Leafy greens are divided into two categories.   Leafy Green I (high Oxalic Acid) and Leafy Green II (low oxalic acid).  You can see our veggie list which has been modified to show which greens may fall into the the different categories.   Spinach  falls into category I.      They recommend you feed at least three types of leafy greens with only ONE of them being from category I, and be sure to rotate.  So basically the spinach would be 1/3 or 1/4 of their greens but do not feed that type daily, rotate the spinach out with something other leafy green that falls into that same category.   Hopefully that makes sense.

HRS Classification I – Higher in oxalic acid, only one per day and avoid sticking to one kind, best to rotate.

HRS Classification II – Lower in oxalic acid.  Fine to feed a variety every day as a staple of your bunny’s diet.

Here is the HRS full article which is a wealth of great diet info

Thank you so much. This is very helpful. Right not mine are getting three leafy types a day. Four if you include cilantro.  It’s a little confusing, but I think I understand.

Right now they are not getting any dark veggies, because I wasn’t exactly sure what to give them and I thought I’d rather be safe then sorry and stay away from them. I bought them some spinach today. I can get them other dark leafy veggies for other days.

Again thank you. My rabbits appreciate it.
