         Hello!

I’m new to the forum and a new bunny owner. Ihave been doing a lot of research and just have a few questions that have gone unanswered. First of all, I bought him some All Living Things (brand) Rabbit Daily Diet (type). He has Timothy Hay to eat all yhe time also. Well the food that i bought him has pellets and a bunch of different things in it. Well Ive fed him twice and both times he wont eat the pellets.  He eats his hay and everything else fine but im wondering if this will cause any health problems. He is a Rex California blend.

Also do I need to get him vaccinated (I live in Tx). i have a regular vet that i plan on taking him to in a month or so im just busy right now and cant fit it in. If i need to get him vaccinated though i can make it a higher priority.

          Hello and welcome.

Firstly, that food is awful for him. You want a PLAIN timothy pellet, no oats and corn and seeds in it. Just plain pellets. Oxbow is a good brand and available at petsmart. Bunnies should NOT have seeds, oats, corn or bread/cereal at all.

In the U.S vets don’t vaccinate rabbits, that is just UK/Aus as far as I am aware. A well bunny check up is a good idea though and a neuter if he is old enough.

I agree, those pellets are awful. You can always tell a bad pellet brand if they have all that extra “stuff” in there. You need one that just has the pellets, Timothy-based, and nothing else. Oxbow is a great brand, but there are others.

You don’t need any vaccinations. I would set up an appointment though to have him checked. You’re planning on having him neutered, right?

Hi welcome to BB Congratulations on your new bunny!

I’m going to echo what Stickerbunny and LBJ10 said. Rabbits need high quality, high fiber plain pellets. How old is your rabbit? When a rabbit is a baby they need alfalfa based pellets but when they are an adult they need timothy based pellets. The House Rabbit Society has a good page on what a rabbit’s diet should be like and how to tell if a pellet brand is good, here is the link: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#pellet Personally, I would recommend Oxbow or American Pet Diner. You may have to experiment with different pellets to see what he likes.

Do you feed him veggies? Rabbits need a variety of veggies everyday, if your rabbit won’t ever eat pellets then he needs even more veggies to make sure he is getting enough vitamins and nutrients.

Another thing rabbits can never eat is any kind of dairy. The yogurt drops sold as rabbit treats are not okay, they cause the build up of bacteria that is harmful for a rabbit (good for a human) and cause G.I. stasis. So that’s another thing to watch out for
