         Hello all!

New to the forums!  I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get a rabbit spayed in San Diego?  Lola is going on 4 months and I can just tell it’s time (none of the furniture is safe any longer and she is extremely tempermental…I’m pretty sure it’s rabbit PMS).  It seems like I picked the most expensive place in the country to get a rabbit spayed…. $300!?  Holy cow.  As a poor grad student that seems a little steep.

I’ve looked on the HRS website and know about their $40 rebate but I just thought I would ask the pros on this forum to see if anyone had any suggestions.

You might check bunspace. They have a vet section that you an search by city and there are comments about the clinics. By calling around you might find a better price. I know in LA there can be a significant price difference.

$300 isn’t outrageous for many places. It really depends. Whatever you do you do have to make sure it is a rabbit-savvy vet. One of the reasons that surgery on rabbits can sometimes be more expensive is because ironically, as common as rabbits are, they are considered exotic since a vet needs the extra training to deal with rabbits as they respond to anesthesia and some meds differently than cats and dogs.  Also, they have some special digestive and dental issues. However, I do know members have been able to have their rabbit spayed for less than $300. Again, it depends on where you live and what options there are, You may also want to contact the San Diego House Rabbit Society to see if they have some more options to offer. Hopefully, there will be a member here from San Diego with some thoughts and options. The Bunspace vet list is great because members who have used the vet or clinic offer reviews.

Awesome!  Thanks guys!  I know to take her to a doctor that deals with rabbits – that is a really important factor to me…I just was amazed at how expensive they are in San Diego!  Crazy!  I told my boyfriend we are going to do a roadtrip to San Fransisco because it would be cheaper to drive there and spend a night to get it done then get her done 5 minutes down the road.  Obviously, we don’t have the time to do that SO we will probably be just eating Ramen for a few weeks to take care of our spoiled rabbit!

No it’s not, my (amazing) vet wanted $500! I found the Napa Humane Spay Clinic through my local House Rabbit Society and she was spayed for $60 (plus $5 for a nail clipping while she was under) on Thursday and she is already back to normal. I was worried too, but it really was a quick and easy procedure and recovery. At least it has been for us.

Spays are between $250 and $300 in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, an area which normally doesn’t have the same high costs as California. I’m not meaning this to turn into a thread of “who pays what where” (we have tons of those threads), just posting to let you know that $300 is an oft-quoted price.

Explore your options, contact some rescues and see who they recommend, also consider traveling a little bit (up to an hour away) to see if you can find less pricey vets outside of the city (where the costs of operation are no doubt higher).

It’s not likely that she will be able to be spayed until 6 months anyways, that is when the majority of vets will perform the operation. In the meantime, work on correcting the environment to minimize damage.

Thanks so much for all your input….I guess I’ll just have to save up my next paycheck for her to get fixed (which is fine…just not necessarily convenient).  Guess her new and improved bunny pen will have to be put on the back burner – it’s not like she is entirely deprived because she has the run of the place when we are home anyways!

Here’s a list of low cost spay and neuter in California. http://www.bunnybunch.org/vetnews2.html#lcs You can also google local spcas and humane societys, they often have spays for as low as $40, but you’ll probably find more around $80 to $100. And make sure you go to a rabbit savy vet, even if it means paying more (paying more doesn’t always mean better, I learned that the hard way). Good luck!

I know this is responding on an old post – but I wanted to add this in case anyone else was looking for a place in San Diego. Lola was spayed at Grand Animal Hospital for $150. They were very knowledgeable about rabbits and I was completely satisfied with the experience. If you are looking for a place to go – this is BY FAR the cheapest I could find and they had awesome customer service!

EDIT: And you can still get the SD House Rabbit Society spay rebate when you send them your receipt (which reminds me … I still need to do!)

I dont live in San Diego but my local human society hosts a clinic every few months for all types of animals.. It only cost me 45.00. Worth it to check them out, just make sure the vet is experienced with rabbit spaying.
