So Molly gets unlimited hay all day and night. She is also being fed her veggies in the evening. When I first wake up I give her a small portion of her pellets, then when I get home a little more, then at the end of the night her last portion. Well last night she literally jumped from the other side of her pen when I was putting the pellets in her dish, and she bit me!! It wasn’t a hard bite or anythig, but it shocked me as she has never bit me over food before. She acts like she is absolutely starving everytime I give her the pellets. But she can’t be starving because she is eating the hay and there is always more than she can finish in a day, and she eats all her veggies. I don’t understand why she does this. Should I cut out the pellets all together? I keep giving her a little more and more each time because I worry that she is starving and I don’t want her to go hungry but I don’t want to over feed her either

How old is Molly? My understanding is that they can have unlimited pellets until 7 months old. So if she’s under that mark, you might want to let her have pellets in her dish at all times unless she has a weight problem.

Also, you might wanna try avoid going into her cage until after she’s spayed. The nipping when you went in sounds more like cage aggression to me rather than her starving.

Stickers and Powder both run to the dish and act like they are starving, rabbits often love their pellets a lot like a treat. If you ever see my two about craisins, you’d think they hadn’t eaten in 5 years … if she’s over 7 months just stick to her normal recommended serving unless she is actually losing weight (as in, you weigh her and notice it). The nipping was probably territorial over the food bowl, or your hands may have smelled like her food if that is where she bit (I get nipped because I still smell like craisins after treats).

She is a craisin fiend too and bolts over when I break out the bag. Maybe she is doing that with the pellets too? She is just 6 months old…I didn’t know she could still have unlimited pellets I thought it was only really little bunnies She also did grunt at me twice today (somethign she has NEVER done before) when I went to pet her in her pen…maybe it is cage aggression. I guess I need to let her have her space..and pellets..lol

Actually, I’ve never heard unlimited pellets recommended, only unlimited hay. I would stick to your pellets regime if it works for you both, with the total amount not to exceed about 1/4 cup.

I just got the feeling that she didn’t mean to bite you, that she was heading for a pellet to chomp and your hand was in the way. Sometimes they can get klutzy in their frenzy for food. She isn’t starving and doesn’t need more food – she’s just happy with what she’s getting.

Rabbitpam – House rabbit society recommends unlimited pellets until 7 months, as does every pellet I have bought on the bag and my vet. I don’t think it hurts them to be limited though, unless there is a problem with growth.

I don’t think she meant to bite me either, but I was just shocked at the gesture and thought wow she must be ravenously hungry! But maybe she is just ridiculously excited for pellets lol Since she is 6 months I think I will just keep giving her the normal amount of pellets. She isnt too fat or too thin so I think this set up is working just fine. I was just worried that the poor thing was starving. I guess she really is just a little piggy lol

A lot of rabbits are piggies when it comes to pellets, that is why we have to strictly limit them, else they will gorge and get fat! haha

All 3 of mine act like they are starving no matter what I’m giving them: meals, treats or hay. I call them my “Starvin’ Marvins”.

I think bunnies are worse than dogs when it comes to treats and begging lol

I wouldn’t suggest cutting out pellets at all.

She sounds like a perfectly normal bunny. Mine act like they’re starving even if they’ve just eaten an hour before. The biting is probably an age/hormonal thing, but running at you excitedly when food is coming is just normal bunny behavior.
