Hi there my rabbit sunshine really didn’t like her cottontail cottage she has had for about 2 months. So I decided to build her a bigger cage and put the cottontail cottage in her cage. Now she loves her cottontail cottage and plays in it all day long. My question is I have noticed her chewing it and I think she has ingested a few pieces. Is this ok or should I remove it?

I forgot to emention she has had other cardboard boxes in her cage and hasn’t chewed them.

Should be fine, as long as she is still eating her regular food and hay

For sure that is fine It’s bunny safe cardboard and like MB said-as long as she’s not eating it instead of her food it’s totally fine

Thanks because last night in the middle of night she was chewing it again and ingesting. How can I get her to chew less of it ?

I don’t think chewing and ingesting really should be a problem unless, like monkeybun said, she’s not eating as much of her food and/or hay. Sounds like she’s having fun!

I agree with peppypoo – she’s having fun. I know it’s not fun for you as it feels like she is destroying a perfectly good cute bunny house!! But for some bunnies, it’s like living in a gingerbread house. Tasty!

And it is safe – the inks on the cottage are safe as well. Here is response from Dana Krempels regarding a concerned bunny owner about their rabbit eating cardboard http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/eating-paper-2.htm (basically the short answer is “Paper is made of cellulose, which is digestible to rabbits.”)

Like the others have said, as long as she isn’t filling up on cardboard and forgoing her hay, greens etc., then it’s not bad for her. Just irritating I am sure to you.

Out of curiosity, what part is she chewing on?

Don’t worry, this is what Wilbur and Totoro’s has been reduced to. It’s their favorite thing so far (I’m getting another and in the meantime I don’t have the heart to take it away from them).

Wilbur is like “stay outta my castle!!!”

Powder loves cardboard… but he eats a lot of hay so I don’t worry about him. Buns + cardboard = destructive fun

Thank you. I am just worried that it is going to cause a blockage in her stomach and I don’t want that. I do fill her litterbox up with alot of hay. So i guess that is ok!

Like the others said, don’t worry. Mine go through a couple Maze Havens every year – ripping up their house is the best part! As long as she’s eating hay and her regular food and not filling up on cardboard she’ll be fine.

I’m interested to learn that she liked it once you put it inside her enclosure. I just moved and dismantled Sammy’s cottage to store it because she never uses upper levels, but was considering putting it in her house as well. I may try it.

It amazed me how much she loves it in her house!
