        Hello everyone,

Ever since I have had pancakes (she is about 8 months old now) she has seemed to itch and scratch her ears a lot, sometimes making them sore, with scratches and little scabby spots that bleed sometimes.

Every time she has been to the vet (injections, spay, post spay check up, second injection) I have asked the vet to check for mites, and each time they have said her ears look fine. It has been unfortunate though that the times she has been her ears have actually been much better than they are sometimes.

To me the indide of her ears sometimes look a little dry and flaky, actually very similar to my skin when I occasinally suffer from exzema.

I was wondering if Pancakes has some kind of exzema or dermatitus. (itchy dry skin) has anyone else come across this in rabbits, and can you recommend anything to help her,

        Thanks as always. x

When my bunny scratched his ears until he had scabs I took him to the vet and they told me it was either allergies, fleas or mites ( even though she couldn’t find any ) but she did a dose of revolution anyways and in a few days his ears were healing.

I also stopped using anything but vinegar & water to clean his area just in case it was allergies but I don’t think it was, I didn’t have him tested because she said there really wasn’t much of a point because there wasn’t anything she could prescribe besides telling me what dose of childrens benadryll to use.

I would suggest you have the vet do a culture of the ears. There could be an outer ear infection which is causing the itching. When my lop scratches his ears frequently, they get dry and scratched-up looking.

If it DOES turn out to just be dry skin (vs. mites or other issues), I’ve found that dabbing a tiny tiny drop of Vitamin E oil on the dry areas can be helpful… I did this last winter when Captain Danger was having dry skin issues on his ears.

I second and third all of the advice!

My bunny girl has suffered ear infections. in the past, she has scratched her ear wayyy too much, and would shake her head. The vet looked in my bunny’s ear (it was red, which means something is infected or irritated), did a culture, and it was an ear infection.

                Baytril cleared it up
