Hey guys I need some help! I have 2 rabbits, both used to be litter box trained. Nugget was my first bun. He was box trained from an early age. I adopted another, Claire, and she was trained when I rescued her. Claire and Nugget were in separate parts of the home until they were bonded and now they share a little “area”. Ever since, both have been regressing. They have 3 large litter boxes with heavy duty black mats under them. They will use the boxes but in addition, they pee and POOP all around them too. The poop is annoying but the pee is just gross. I live with roommates and they didnt want the rabbits in their living space so they are in my room where they have a large area to run. They don’t poop all over my room, just all around their “area” which is gated off. It’s gross enough to have a litter box in my room but the peeing and pooping has gotten out of hand. I love them to death but having a pet has got to be more enjoyable than this….help!!

Sounds like territorial marking.. It will likely continue until they are bonded, unless you don’t let them have a common play space. Bunnies will mark against other rabbits that “invade” their space.

In your profile it says that Nugget was soon to be neutered – are both rabbits altered now?

Yes both are altered. It seems weird bc they have a common play space and appear to be fully bonded. Any suggestions?

If they are newly bonded this behavior is normal – as they age become more bonded, the territorial marking should dissipate.

Clean it up with vinegar as often as you can, put pee soaked paper towels and droppings into the box. But it is normal for buns to lose some litter habits when they bond, if you’re good about cleaning it they may stop soon as they become more comfortable together.

I found the easiest way to clean it up was to put something disposable in the area around the litter boxes and just take it up, throw it away and move on. You don’t want something that is like litter, so preferably something not very absorbent.
