Harley is about three years old. He’s litter box trained but he’s not neutered at all. I’m having a real problem with him spraying on my couch. Is it normal that he only does it on the couch? I try to keep him off of it at this point but sometimes he still gets up there. Is it too late to neuter him at this age?  Does this sound like spraying or is it something else?

I want to buy a new couch at this point but I want to fix the problem before I do….thoughts?!

And this problem has only been an issue for the last year or so. he hasn’t seemed to have this problem before that.

He isn’t too old as long as he is healthy. But neutering may not fix it. Marking furniture that smells so strongly of human is pretty common, they get offended it doesn’t smell of them.

I would recommend neutering him to see if it fixes the problem. But like Sticker said, it may be a habit at this point that not even neutering will fix. The only way you’ll know is to have him neutered and see how he is after. Have you considered changing his location or is he free roam?

Marking couches is common, so neutering may not fix it if it’s an ingrained habit, but it could take away his primary motivation to mark his territory. He’s definitely not too old – just take him in for a pre-op appointment and the vet will run bloodwork to make sure he’s healthy.

For now, I would keep him off of the couch and clean it very well with vinegar. Hopefully, once he is neutered and recovered he won’t remember the habit and will be able to start fresh.

he has free roam of the living room when I’m home. however that’s another problem i’ve been having. i just moved into a new house two weeks ago and went from an all carpeted apartment to a hardwood floor filled house. he’s not a fan of the floors! so I now have an area rug down and blankets down so he has a larger space to run around in. he’s not adjusting as quickly as i had hoped he would though. i can’t even get him to jump out of the cage on his own anymore. i have to pick him up and plop him on the floor. didn’t think it would be this much of an adjustment for him.

I agree, he is definitely not too old to be neutered. Here’s a really good page from the HRS on spaying and neutering: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/spay-neuter.html . It should be really safe with a rabbit savvy vet (like over 99% success rate), do you have one already? You can have bloodwork done to check for any pre-existing conditions that could make the surgery dangerous. And it could make a difference in his habits.

Yeah, any time I set my rabbits down on wood floor they slide around and act like they can’t move. But they’ll run around on the wood floor on their own. It may take him more time to adjust to the new environment, rabbits get stressed during those kinds of situations. Rugs are a good idea.

                    Welcome to BB btw
