People do both. I personally like using wood platforms with dowels but some people use NIC cube with carpet on top. Would you like some pictures on how I connect my second level?

Do you make the floor that the cube squares sit on out of plywood? then just put tiles on it?

All of the stores near me only seem to sell whole sheets of plywood which is double what i need!!

They often cut wood at the store if you ask. At least any Home Depot or Lowes I have ever been in will gladly cut something for you.

I didn't use any wood for Porky's condo. The bottom is a plastic chair mat (the kind that keeps office chair casters from sinking into carpet.) The upper floors are NIC cube grids, with carpet protector (the plastic roll kind) and some cheap mats from IKEA over it.
