Is there really a difference between the breeds? I got my rabbit from a (terrible) pet store and his cage said mini-lop (then again they knew nothing about him and he didn’t have any food or water and was skin and bones) but at the vet recently when I got his teeth trimmed the vet said he was a beautiful netherland (aka holland) lop. I said the place I got him said he was a mini lop and she was surprised he wasn’t a netherland.

I looked online and some things say holland and mini lops are the same so I’m confused. Not that it matters too much but I was just wondering.

Here is a picture of him.

From what I can find … it seems it depends on what country you are in. In the U.S., mini lop is used to describe a breed different from a holland lop, but in the UK they call the holland lop “Miniature Lop”. *shrug*

My opinion: He’s a cute lop

They are recognized by ARBA as two separate breeds. Pet stores label all lops mini lops because people love small animals (ime) but mini lops are actually quite a bit bigger. Yours could certainly be a mix as well. But either way very cute bunny

I believe Stickerbunny is right, and really the only difference (in the US) between the mini lop and the holland lop is the size from what I’ve read. If he is more than 4 pounds he is probably a mini lop. Either way, as Stickerbunny said, he’s a good lookin’ lop!

I have never heard a vet call them netherland lops. I do hope you corrected her

                  Ack, deleted my post!

First, MB is right that netherland lop isn’t a breed – there is only holland, mini, English, and French lop. There is a difference between the breeds other than weight – hollands have a more smushed in face and sit upright, while minis have a longer face, longer ears, and are posed lying down for shows (the body types are different so they are posed differently). Of course, bunnies not bred for show aren’t going to show the strong features that a show bun would, so often pet store buns don’t look exactly like the breed standard. They tend to call every bunny a mini or a dwarf, so I wouldn’t trust what the cage said.

Hollands average around 3lbs, but a false dwarf (one with now dwarfing gene) is usually 4lbs or so. Minis are generally 5-7lbs.

In England and Australia the names are different – their mini lop is our holland, and their dwarf lop is our mini (I think that’s how it goes)

How much does he weigh? I can’t tell which one he is from the pic, but his color is tortoise shell which is very very common in hollands and not so much in minis, so I would guess he’s a holland based on color alone. Very cute little guy!

                    You forgot American Fuzzy Lops!

I wish they’d pick a new name for the mini lop.. it’s confusing with the holland lop, and other countries having differing names!

Netherland, Holland – very easy to get confused about that since Holland is in the Netherlands :~)

He very well could be a mixed lop breed.

I agree with Sarita. Coming from a pet store, he may be a mixed breed. Bindi was from a pet store and was labelled “Mini Lop” but I assume he has some other breed in him because he has very long fur.

Your bunny is super cute, whatever breed he is.

I think he is only 3 lbs, but his face isn’t very smushed in but that is probably because he is mixed with something, I doubt he is purebred.

Yea, mixed breeds are very common at pet stores…at stores and probably most shelters too, a bunny will be labeled whatever breed he/she most closely resembles, with no guarantee of breed purity (not like it matters!).  Oftentimes, “mini” or “dwarf” is also tacked on whether or not it is true, since small animals are more popular and sell better.

Whatever Goblin is, he’s absolutely adorable though!

Bunnies mixed with lops are often not lop earred, so I would suspect he’s purbred, just not “well” bred (I don’t mean that as an insult, of course, just that he’s not bred to the standard for his breed). He’s small enough that I would guess he’s not mixed with mini lop either, though it’s possible. It’s common to see purebred hollands who look just like him. My Hannah isn’t a well bred mini lop, and doesn’t exactly match the standard, but I’m almost positive she’s purebred. Like I said above, his color is also extremely common in hollands and not nearly as common in other breeds, which makes me think he’s probably a purebred.

He’s a lop-eared rabbit, the rest doesn’t really matter! I’ve seen purebred Holland lops that were as big as my old mini lop, and he was 6 lbs, and my holland lop, who is most likely the result over too much 4H breeding is about 2.5 pounds. Here is a pic of my two when full grown side by side. One is a Holland and the other is a Mini Lop

                                .
