        Hi everyone,

My bunny is well litter trained and keeps her droppings mostly in her cage.  However, when I check on her in the mornings, there’s droppings all over the place from overnight.

Last night we forgot to turn a dim light in the living room off.  When I woke up this morning, her cage was almost completely free of droppings outside her litter box.  I am now wondering if she’s pooping everywhere at night because she can’t see her litter box.

Have any of you had this experience before?  Do any of you recommend keeping a night light?

        Thank you very much!

The bun rooms light is on a dimmer switch, so I just turn the dimmer down to the lowest setting instead of turning the light off at night – Stickers thumps like a mad thing if it’s totally dark. Powder doesn’t mind the dark, he’s in the living room / bedroom atm and I turn the lights off to go to sleep and he doesn’t mind. Different bunnies prefer different things, so if she prefers the night light, imo give her one.

I don’t think its because she can’t see the litterbox, I mean she can follow her nose just fine I’m sure. Idk why she would decide to do things differently one night (bunnies are weird lol), but try repeating it and see if the light really plays a factor. Be a scientist and put your hypothesis to the test I have a little night light for Molly cuz I feel bad that I am sleeping while she is up and active all during the night and I want her to be able to see her toys and look around if she wants to.

He is in the kitchen so I leave the overhead stove vent light on at night, but its not because he can’t find his litter box, he startles easy at night when its completely dark.

My rabbits are in the dark, I don’t think that is a good thing to keep a light on during all the night. Even if they take habbits with us, they have to stay able to know if it’s day or night.

Don’t worry, your bunny doesn’t need any light to find her litterbox : rabbits have a good view even with very few light, and their other senses are good enough anyway.

Well, even in the wild they would have the moon – a night light just mimics that light, rather than pitch black of a man-made room with curtains, so there is no way it could hurt their knowing if it is day/night. mine live on natural cycle for the most part, with windows for light during the day

I do have a nightlight for Squirrel. He gets scared so easily in the dark if we have to walk by, so I got him a light. His hearing isn’t so good

Thanks everyone! Sounds like the bunny army is divided on this one. I left the light on last night, and this morning, there was no mess. As an experiment I’m gonna do a week with it on and a week with it off.

PS The light isn’t very bright. I live in the city in apartment, surrounded by other apartments, so we don’t get any street light in our apartment.

My bunny has the light from the TV in my room because I sleep with it on. At night, though, he does do more poops outside his litterbox than during the day! I really don’t know why!

She should technically be able to find it, wild rabbits live in underground warrens which would be pitch black, however it sounds like there may be a funny little habit she has associated with litter habits and the light, maybe try a night light and see if it makes a difference?

I leave a small light on for my buns in their room. Use the Ikea TASSA NATT http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80128815/. You can change the picture as well if you look up Ikea Hacks. They have a pretty room to themselves, so the lighting in there is fairly dim.

Well, after a week, I had the nightlight on 4 nights and she was in the dark for 3 nights. I can conclusively say that the cage is incredibly clean the mornings after the night lights were on.

It’s a very dim light – but since we get no street lights into our apartment, it’s completely pitch black. The nightlight seems to help with her getting to the can (at least for our bun). Hope that helps with ya’ll who may have issues litter training!

                                  Glad the light is helping

Spooky has a night light too, hehe. Like others have said, Spooky startles really easy when it is completely dark. Also, rabbits can see best in dim lighting as opposed to dark or light.
