Hey, my rabbit Simon, hes a rescue, who his previous “owner” mistreated him to the point of blinding one of his eyes and deaf in one ear maybe?

Anywho, Simon loves to snuggle once he knows its me, I know its rare for a rescued rabbit to trust people so soon.

The last few nights, he thumps when i go near his cage, which he had not done before.  When we had gotten him, before i picked him up I would give him a small treat to make him connect, me, and YUMMY! together.  A slice of a strawberry.

Im just curious what I can do to kind of take care of this? or if it can be…

If he is blind in one eye, he might be thumping because he hears something but can’t tell it is you. Do you just walk in there? Have you tried talking to let him know you’re coming?

Yeah i say his name soft so as not to scare him, and i always put my hand, slowly into his view,  and move very slowly the whole time, as to make sure not to scare him, poor guys been through so much as is.

Have you had him checked by a veterinarian? It might be a good idea just to make sure you’re doing everything you can for your bun’s disabilities. Also, your vet might have some good suggestions for caring for him/bonding with him.

It sounds like you’re doing the right things, it just sounds like he is concerned when you enter because he can’t see or hear you that well. Keep his environment constant so he knows where everything is, and try to get in a routine. Say the same words and do the same things so he knows it’s you entering the room. Keep it up with the treats, but I would stop picking him up, since that is alarming for most buns, so it might be extra frightening for a bunny who can’t see.

Keep trying, it sounds like you’re really trying and doing a good job with him!

Yeah, the first day we got him i brought him right to the same vet in lees Summit Mo, DR Placke, who checked him out (Fantastic vet btw) I had a hunch about the vision, but placke kind of cleared it up and gave me some pointers. But i alway slike to get multiple points of view.

It is weird tho, I dont think he has a “scratch spot” on his head or between his ears, or anywhere. With our Mina, and even rabbit that have never met me before if i scratch them you see them liking it, Simon is just wide eyed and frozen.
