I am seeing a lot of conflicting into about the safety of shaved pine in litterboxes. Some say it’s safe, some say it causes liver damage! I’ve seen plenty of pine toys for rabbits and even pinecones for rabbits.

So…is pine safe or no? I bought a HUGE compressed package of shaved pine for like $5 because the ranch supply place I went to suggested it for rabbits and assured me it was safe but I have NO problem returning it if it isn’t safe for my bun. I haven’t put it in his litterbox…I still have some Carefresh left and am using that but I’m not impressed with it’s lack of odor coverage.

If it’s not safe, what do you recommend for litterboxes? I hope I posted this in the right place! Thank you for any help you can provide!

Pine is not safe unless it’s in pelleted form like Feline Pine. Pine shavings have toxins that cause respiratory issues in rabbits and other small animals. Sorry! I recommend something like unscented Yesterday’s News, which I think is pretty good at controlling odors. Also horse stall pellets (not shavings) are a good option.

If the ranch supply store has horse stall bedding or wood stove pellets, those are both safe.

If you liek the idea of wood shavings, aspen shavings are safe. No pine or cedar shavings

I personally use wood stove pellets. Yes, these are often pine, but they are treated differently than the shavings and thus are safer. I would not use the wood stove pellets for other pocket pets that have cages fully lined with them, but they work really well for my bunny and are fairly cheap! I have been using them for about… 3 years now. I would never go back to anything else, except for Yesterdays News for her travel cage, but that is for other reasons.

This is exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you everyone! I will return the shaved pine tomorrow and pick up either shaved aspen or Yesterdays News. At the ranch supply store, I asked if they had horse stall bedding in pelleted form and they said they didn’t.

                  I appreciate the help.

I love aspen. I use aspen pellets and also cover with aspen shavings, which are safe.

Also, pine for building, like boards for habitats, needs to be UN-Treated to be safe. (You ask for it at Home Depot, etc.)
Toys made from pine are also untreated (we hope) and should use soy-based or other non-toxic inks for colors.
