I read on a post here that stores such as Petsmart and Petco sell many things that are not appropriate for rabbits.

Is it just treats that I need to be careful of at the pet stores?

Because those are the main pet stores in my area, what are good websites that sell rabbit supllies?

Are there any discount websites, also?

I’ve done google searches and looked at a few sites – just wondering which ones are the best.

        Thanks!

As far as websites go – I think BB sells excellent supplies! And if Petco and Petsmart are local to you, then any last minute products you can buy there Here are some things you need to look out for at those shops: Not healthy treats such as, nuts, yogurt, seeds, and sugar coated cereals in treats. And also I don’t agree with harnesses.. which they sell (They can seriously injure the spine or even break a bunnies bones). Another thing is molasses tunnels w/ grain. Those are not bunny- friendly ingredients. Other than that, I think thats it There are also websites with things to look out for I hope this helps!

Sometimes the hay sold at those chain stores can be very dusty. Some brands just generally are, such as Kaytee, though recently a lot of people have been getting dusty Oxbow, even though they are normally a leader for quality hay. Most of us use bowls for our rabbits, not the bottles commonly sold for small animals, though this is more of a personal preference.

Most treats, say at least 90%, sold at Petsmart/Petco are not safe for rabbits. Oxbow Papaya tablets are safe though and I frequently see them. The best thing to do is just ask here, on this forum, not the employee working at the store. Most will know nothing about rabbits and just try to make a sale. So if you are unsure, just jot down the name and a description and i am sure someone here will point you in the right direction!

Most of the toys I see in stores are ok for rabbits, but of course I haven’t been to all pet stores so I can’t say for sure on that front.

When it comes to treats, I just buy dried fruit at the grocery store.  Safe, easy, convenient!

Thanks for all of the replies!! I had no idea that the treats at the pet store wouldn’t be okay for my bunnies. Luckily I’ve only fed them fresh veggies because they’re cheaper and healthier than manufactured treats anyway. I will make sure to read the ingredients if I do get treats!

I’ve checked out BinkyBunny’s shop and it has some pretty cool stuff…I may have to break down and order some stuff soon.

I’m with KytKattin – this site has saved me from having a very fat, unhealthy, sick or dead rabbit. Last night – the guy at the feed store tried to sell me Alfalfa for my rabbit, but I knew better than getting him hay so high in protein. I’m really in love with this site!

Very often toys and treats are one and the same. Some buns have little use for toys unless they can be consumed. Willow toys are awesome because they are completely edible and taste good (I guess?) Sometimes the most basic items work best, plain wooden chew toys for example. Toys don’t need to be cut in the shape of a carrot and dyed orange to get your bunny’s attention. Trust me, they know it’s not a carrot. :o)

If you are looking for another site on top of BB’s, I use Drs. Foster & Smith for my hay and pellet needs. Their supplies is of excellent quality, and almost always has free shipping. I have not yet made a purchase from BB’s, as I only found this site today, but will be ordering toys for my bunnies from there as soon as the haven series comes in, as I’d like to purchase those also. Just wanted to mention what I use.
