The rescue I use to volunteer for instructed me to give my male rabbit ibuprofen after his neuter surgery. I have always followed the advice of this woman, but have recently learned that many of the things I have been instructed on are wrong! I found varying opinions on this via the internet. Is it safe to give? I did have some Metacam, but ran out. I have a “use to be foster” going in for spay surgery on Wednesday and want to be prepared, in terms of pain meds, for her.

I would not. I don’t know if it’s safe for bunnies (I would call your vet) but I know it’s not safe for dogs so I would imagine it can’t be very good for bunnies. Just ask your vet if you can have some more metacam (they should be sending the foster home with it anyway)

I’ve used aspirin with the consent of my vet. Can the vet give you some metacam?

The aspirin though was for arthritis, not for pain management after a spay…

Things change all the time on whats advisible for rabbits and what isn’t. I suppose this lady has been using it for a long time without trouble. Still, it’s different when giving something to your own rabbit.

Mine didn’t have meds post neuter and they seemed fine. They had a long lasting med as part of the procedure and that was all. With a female, you could always request a med to have at home just in case.

Is your boy doing ok? He may not need anything. Is there a lot of swelling? You can actually apply a compress that can give relief if things look inflammed.

Honestly though, I had 2 boys down last year and they were groggy from the anaesthtic but recovered pretty swiftly.

I would be hesitant. As a pharmacy tech i know our pharmacist always recommend talking with the doctor before giving it to an infant. As a bunny weighing as much as one….. I would call an vet or an emergency vet before giving it to the bunbun.

Oh no, my boy had his surgery months ago. I was just trying to prepare myself for my girl’s spay on Wed. I talked to the vet and they will prescribe me pain meds for her.
