Things are going much better for Mittens and me! I have given her “free range” of the show barn (after bunny proofing it) and I’m leaving her hutch open for her access.  I put her toys out in the floor and she is playing like crazy. She now comes to me when she hears my voice and will put her head under my hand for petting. No more biting! I am not trying to pick her up at all. No reason to. I am hand feeding her the veggies that she gets each day (she is a parsley addict) and she follows me all around while I do my chores! However, she doesn’t seem to want to eat her pellets. She is eating her hay and her salads, but isn’t the least bit interested in the pellets. Are they essential? Also, she doesn’t want me to touch any of her except her head and ears. Is that typical bunny or will that change with time and trust? I want to thank everyone SO much for your advice. She has improved so much in that past few days. She crawls up on me and sniffs me. Hasn’t charged or thumped or tried to bite me even once. I am going to continue to do everything I can to build my friendship with this bunny. She is a lot of fun!!!!!

Wow! Congratulations! You are doing an excellent job with Mittens, and it’s obviously made a huge difference. Pellets aren’t necessarily essential; some rabbits only feed their buns hay and veggies, but you have to be somewhat careful. What kind are you feeding – type and brand? It’s also pretty normal for some buns to only like to be touched on their head/ears. However, as Mittens gets used to you touching her she may let you start petting her whole body. It’ll just take time.

We are so proud of you! Your relationship with your bun will only keep getting better! YAY!

That’s such a great update! She sounds like such a happy girl.

The petting thing is normal – some rabbits only like to be petted on the body, some only on the head. My girl is very comfortable with petting on the head but she gets nervous when I pet her body. Gradually I’ve worked up to petting her head until she’s relaxed, then giving her a couple of strokes on the back, then going back to her head, repeat. She’s much more comfortable with it now.
