im looking for some new toys/ playhouses for my rabbit. before i got him i bought a bunch of “throw” toys (jingly balls, hay balls, etc) and he doesnt even want to touch them. i also got some hanging hay toys but he has only nibbled on it a few times when i first got him.

anyone got any suggestions? i was thinking of getting a tunnel of some sort? maybe a playhouse like the cottontail cottage? or something? i also want to buy some hay toys (hay twists, hay balls, hay mats) but i dont want to get them and then realize that he doesnt like them. i know that every rabbit has their own preferences and all but … my rabbit is very curious and is very active; but he also likes to flop and rest after he’s done running around .

he is around 6 months and a lop. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! also i like to get some of his pellets and hide them in places (under cups, inside pinecones – that have been dried and “cooked” and  baked properly-, inside his little hideyhouse and in his hay rack.) he seems to find them after a few minutes of searching and i dont want him to get fat (i dont give him that much when i do this maybe around 1 tablespoon. and for his daily rations i give him around 2 and 1/2 tablespoons).

Well I’ll list Bunjamin’s favorite toys. He’s approx. 6 months old too!
He loves his tunnel and his mini haven. Those are his places he takes his afternoon naps and sometimes he like to push them around too. He likes willow balls the best. I’ve tried the willow toys in cute shapes but he doesn’t seem to touch them unless he’s super bored. He absolute loves loves loves willow wreaths from BB. He also likes his seagrass mat. He hasn’t touched the timothy twist and I believe he just doesn’t like timothy so I stay away from it. Pretty much everything I mentioned is from the BB store.

And one of his all time favorite things to do. And this is like super simple and free. But he likes a cardboard box full of hay. It started with a box I used to transport hay from where I store it to where his room is but its like just his size and he sits in it often and eats and likes to chew the sides. I’ll throw some of the willow leaves off the wreath in there and he’ll go dig for them.

Last note, study his behavior. What does he do to the stuff you give him? Bunjamin is primarily a chewer (hence why he can’t have carpet) and so I aim for toys that are mainly for chew. You bought throw toys (I did too) but it sounds like your boy is like mine and not super into it. Mine also like anything he thinks he’s not suppose to have. So if he chews a box that isn’t bunny-proofed (like still has tape on and stuff) I’ll pretend like I don’t want him to have it. Take off the tape and then accidentally leave it on the floor. He gets a thrill out of doing something he thinks he’s not suppose to do

thanks! and LOL on the last part, i guess some bunnies just like the rush and hmm… my rabbit loves to just run around. he keeps on trying to get into my desk area (which i have blocked with an xpen, but he still chews on the bars) he isnt much of a digger or a chewer, he has digged in the carpet before but it was only for a few seconds and it only happened just a few times. (and anyway we are going to change out the carpet with tile so he can ruin it all he wants – as long as he doesnt eat it).

i’ll see if i can make a little “digging box” for him .

Good idea! He might also like a digging tunnel. I made one after finding a long shipping box that bunjamin could fit into and then put some pieces of newspaper in there and he loved that until he grew out of it! :/

Some free toys are. A sheet my rabbit loves to dig in her sheet. Toilet Paper roll stuffed with hay. A lunch paper bag stuffed with hay. a phone book with the front and back taken off. My bunnies also love. Apple twiggs from bunny bytes and willow wicker baskets. Newspaper. Also cardboard boxes so they can run in an out of them. Straw mats. Metal lids from like a sauce jar make sure they are very clean wash them a couple of times. Some baby toys are great toys. Cats toys with bells in them like the balls with bells in them are great. There are some great toys in the toy archive on BB. I bought a cottontail cottage for my bun sunshine she doesn’t really place with it much. I guess she has to get use to it!

Ahh thanks. I can’t decide from the maze haven, mini haven (which seems nice since you can turn it into a double decker sort of thing) and the cottontail cottage … I’ve tried the toilet paper tube and giving my rabbit a blanket but he doesn’t seem to care too much about those! I want to give him a phone book… But…. I can’t find any? We have one phonebook but it’s practically ruined cause it’s been outside near our front door for years. Where could I go about getting one?

I don’t own any of the BinkyBunny “havens.” I have been eyeing (eying?) it for years, but the shipping to Canada cost has always warded me off. And for me, it isn’t worth it to buy from Canada, either since shipping from the States is actually cheaper than buying it in Canada. Anyway, that’s off-topic.

My buns own all sorts of bunny real estate (cardboard boxes with cut-up with holes for windows and exits that link to each other). Cardboard homes are good for chewers and climbers. It allows buns to dig and chew; and if you have it stacked safely (and stuck together somehow) you can have a two/three level cardboard home. I also have a small row of three small mini boxes with some space in-between. My buns like to jump across each one, like high-level long jump. (Neither very high nor long. The height of the boxes is about 6-8 inches and the space between the boxes is about 12-15 inches.)

Tunnels are fun to run through, especially for racing buns. Concrete forming tubes from the hardware store are really great.

As for toys, I have spent a lot of money on it in the early years, and most of it is wasted. Best toys are free. A box filled with crumbled newspaper is fun for chewers and diggers. Similarly, straw mats are good for that. Toilet paper tubes with hay is good for a short while, but my buns get bored of those quickly. My buns favourite toys are actually the dustpan and the litter scooper. It’s light and fun to fling. (I have other “fling”-toys, but they like that most.)

PS. As for the phone book, try asking your phone company. They may ship a few to your house for free. In Canada, we have to call up Bell.

PPS. My buns love branches of all sorts! Apple, willow, birch, maple. I think willow is the favourite for all my buns.

I have the tubes, got two 4ft ones for $7 from home depot (one 8ft one and had them cut it in half for me) and my buns like it, but they prefer a vacuum cleaner box to use as a tunnel for some reason lol

You can make your own little cardboard forts, if the shipping is too much – take two giant cardboard boxes, one concrete form, cut a hole in the sides of both boxes and attach tube as a tunnel, add shredded paper and stuff for digging fun. you can get cardboard boxes free from places like subway, or grocery stores, just ask them to save you a few boxes and they usually will. Or take two boxes, stack them, cut a hole and reinforce the bottom with some thin wood.

Ah yes, there are no worries about bunny real estate over here. If one building goes down (chewed/dig at enough for it to be toppled and thrown out), it gets replaced immediately (new cardboard box).

If you feeling unmotivated like I was to building a fort, I recommend the Mini Haven. I liked it because it was two stories and you can do several things with it. And they sell replacement parts in case your bun chews a side and compromises its strengths. If you do this just be sure to follow directions carefully. (I tried to just skim and build and had to re-do parts- my own fault of course )

We have 2 buns who are never locked up and have full access to our home at all times. My 7-year old Dutch REALLY enjoys his cat tunnel from Petco. I bought 2 of them and tied them together and put them in my hallway. He doesn’t play around in it, necessarily, as in zipping around back and forth in it, but he always goes out of his way to use it to travel through the hallway. Even when he’s in a rush, he will make sure to use the tunnel. It has a crinkly material, so you can hear him frantically running through it from another room. It’s pretty funny. That is about the only store-bought toys my buns use. I’ve bought plastic rings, building blocks made of fabric (intended for babies), hay hideyholes from Oxbow, plastic balls, etc, and they show zero interest. However, they really enjoy chewing on cardboard boxes, junk mail, and just about any type of paper. I just have it around in my dining room so that whenever the urge to chew strikes my buns, they know it’s there. I also made a cardboard maze and placed it under my bed. They go inside there to sleep at night and to take naps during the day.
