         Hello everyone,

I’m sitting here and my bunny is laying down on the second story shelf in her cage and she looks quite relaxed, eyes half closed, her ears were up a minute ago, she’s in the bunny loaf position, and now she is asleep. Right before she fell asleep though she was laying there and making a loud crunching noise? I know soft crunch noises are a good thing that bunnies often do while getting petted and are content, but I’ve heard that loud crunchy noises signal pain or discomfort? I’m worried because she has a torn nail that is healing right now and I’m scared that she’s in pain or something because of it.

Has anybody heard of bunnies (or have bunnies) that make loud crunching noises while drifting off to sleep?

        Thanks,

        Emily and Abby Bunny

My rabbits make surprisingly loud noises with their teeth while they sleep. I think it’s all about context, if she’s sleeping or flopping it probably doesn’t mean she’s in pain. But if she’s hunched and/or her eyes are open wide (like bugging out) she probably is in pain. I find myself going back to this website often: http://language.rabbitspeak.com/ It teaches about how to pick up on what your bun is trying to communicate with you. Hope this helps

Yes, really depends on context. My Missespants makes a lot of loud chewing noises when she’s sleeping. And she sleeps on her side. I think she’s dreaming of treats.

My bun always chatters her teeth when she’s falling asleep. I wouldn’t worry about it unless she’s doing it at other times as well, or is displaying other signs of sickness. For now, enjoy the cuteness!

I would check the torn nail/paw to make sure there isn’t any sign of infection or other injury again. If not, she was probably just being a loud mouth. It always surprises me how freaking LOUD Lolli is when she’s eating. LOL
