I have a new foster rabbit dubbed Fifi who doesn’t seem to like hay. I never see her eat it even though she’s got a whole hay rack to herself.

Any ideas to get her to eat more hay and less pellets? Or is it not a big deal?

Here are some pics. She’s a shaved Angora due to severe matting from neglect . But she has SUCH a bossy and demanding personality it’s hilarious. She also doesn’t like her cage and would rather roam the house or chill in the room with us, haha.

She’s cute. You could try giving less pellets to see if that will entice her to eat more hay. She definitely needs hay.

Some buns don’t like eating out of a hay rack, so try different ways of offering the hay as well – my two won’t use a hay rack no matter how I present it. And buns have pickiness about TYPE of hay, if you’re feeding say timothy, could try oat or orchard to see if that is her preference, some don’t like the texture of timmy hay. How many pellets does she get? If it’s too much she may be filling up on those.

I just fill her bowl because I’m used to having young growing bunnies and a nursing mother. I think she’s still pretty young too (maybe 6 months?) because she’s spayed but she’s pretty small.

I would decrease the pellets, too.

If she’s only six months, maybe trying to mix alfalfa and timothy/orchard/oat hay to encourage her hay consumption? Most bunnies love alfalfa. Once she starts eating more hay, I would gradually decrease the alfalfa content.

less pellets, more variety of ay. That may help entice the hay eating

                      Awhhh she is cute

Maybe try mixing a little bit of the pellets in the hay? That works for my bunnies.

Experiment with differnt types of hay definately. Some buns are incredibly picky :/ If you find one she loves then she will have no problem eating it. When taking my bunny off of alfalfa, she hated the timothy, so I tried orchard, which is sweeter than timothy (which probably reminded her of alfalfa) but its much healthier than alfalfa. If she is still really really young tho she can have the alfalfa.

With my foster bun, turned fulltime resident, he had zero interest in hay in the beginning. After ruling out dental issues, I put him on alfalfa to get him eating at all. Then super slowly started mixing it with a huge variety:oat, orchard, botanical, 3 kinds of Timothy. After about 1 month i got him off alfalfa. By the end of 2 months he is eating Timothy as his day-to-day and i use the others as treat hays to keep it interesting. He changed his mind like every other day to what he liked/didn’t and I was frustrated, but just gave it time

i agree, check her teeth just incase. Other than that, my bunny Biscuit died last week at 8 years old, he stopped eating hay at 2 years old and never touched it again. EVER :p Some bunnys are just stubborn! But keep trying
